Pitt, Clooney 'can't play poker', by Shaun Davies, ninemsn - 16th June 2008

Australia's king of cards has confirmed what many may have already suspected — most of the cast of Ocean's 13 can't play poker.

Poker supremo Joe Hachem, who won US$7.5 million ($7.9 million) at the World Series of Poker in 2005, played Texas Hold 'Em against the film's stars at Cannes in 2007.

But while Matt Damon and Don Cheadle showed some aptitude for the game, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and other cast members were completely out of their depth, Hachem told ninemsn.

"These guys are supposed to be action hero types and suddenly I walk in the room and they're looking a little frightened. But I wasn't there to take anyone's money," he said.

"George and Brad were very reluctant to play. Their on-screen persona is, you know, these action dudes and they don't want to be seen as being stupid."

But it was James Bond star Daniel Craig who seemed to fear poker more than anyone.

Reports surfaced in 2006 that Craig, who first played poker-loving spy Bond in Casino Royale, was a dud when it came to playing cards.

Hachem said Craig, who was also staying in Cannes, "turned white" when asked to join in a game.

"He didn't know how to play. But I don't blame him," he said.

The poker champ was also surprised the stars did not carry cash and had to borrow money from each other to throw in for the pot.

Not surprisingly, Hachem cleaned up — but he didn't keep the winnings.

The game was played at Hotel Ducal in Cannes, as part of a promotion for the online gambling site PokerStars.com, which Hachem represents.

Hachem said he was somewhat overwhelmed to be in the presence of Hollywood royalty, but managed to "pretty much bluff [his] way through everything".

He said that while his life had changed forever since his 2005 win, his family and friends kept him grounded.

"There's no such thing as normal anymore. Once you go through that trapdoor there's no coming back. But the critical elements of my life, they haven't changed," he said.

Flirt, Drink & Watch YouTube With Casino Touch-Screen Table, by Tashi Singh - The Post Chronicle

Microsoft's Casino touch-screen tables have debuted in a Las Vegas bar giving Sin City visitors new high-tech party tools.

Microsoft and Harrah's Entertainment have introduced a high-tech interactive bar table that lets patrons order drinks, watch YouTube videos, play touch-screen games and even flirt with one another.

Harrah's said it put six customized Surface computers with built-in 30-inch, or 76-centimeter, flat screens in a bar at its Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Harrah's reportedly crafted its own software for the machines and equipped them with cameras so people can send pick-lines, drinks or both to bar-goers they are interested in connecting with in real life.

A spokeswoman for Microsoft said the units sold for a base price of $10,000.

A program called Mixologists lets patrons play bartender by creating and ordering concoctions of whatever cocktails and mixers they click on. Another program lets users watch YouTube videos, either by searching or choosing from a list.

The table also includes a program called Flirt, which lets people exchange original messages or choose from suggested come-on lines.

Other programs let users play video games or get information about restaurants, shows, nightclubs and other Harrah's attractions.

Putting on a poker face, by Alan Kohler - Business Spectator

An interesting sidelight to the Opes Prime debacle is that two of Australia’s leading class action players – IMF (Australia) and Slater and Gordon – seem to have had a falling out.

IMF is Australia’s only litigation funder – a monopoly in a relatively new field. There are really only two law firms it can use to run class action cases: Slater and Gordon and Maurice Blackburn.

That’s because the other major law firms have too many conflicts for corporate class actions and none of the other independent firms is big enough.

After swapping between the two firms for a couple of years, IMF has now settled on Maurice Blackburn because, according to IMF sources, they provide a better service.

There is no formal partnership arrangement between them – it’s just that IMF has decided it prefers MB over S&G and will use them most, if not all, of the time.

This is a disaster for the listed Slater and Gordon since IMF is a monopoly provider of litigation funding in Australia. Its response has been to find someone else who is prepared to enter the Australian market.

Step up, Reagan Silber, the man behind Commonwealth Legal Funding LLC, which is funding Slater and Gordon’s Opes Prime case, as well as its Centro class action.

Mr Silber is a champion poker player who came 46th in the 2007 Poker World Series. He is also a successful plaintiff lawyer who made a lot of money in property.

Now he is taking on IMF in Australia via class actions with Slater and Gordon, and is planning to turn the Australian litigation funding business into a duopoly instead of a monopoly.

Could be an interesting stoush: Peter Gordon and the poker maestro Reagan Silber up against Rob Ferguson (the former CEO of BT Australia), Hugh McLernon and John Walker at IMF, with the redoubtable Bernard Murphy at Maurice Blackburn.

Virgin Games Wins 'Best Gaming Affiliate Programme' at Affiliate Marketing Industry's a4uAwards 2008

London, UK (PRWEB) June 11, 2008 -- Virgin Games (www.virgingames.com) today announced that it has won the title of 'Best Gaming Affiliate Programme' at the affiliate marketing industry's a4uAwards 2008 - the most prestigious affiliate awards ceremony in the UK.

Sixteen awards reflecting all areas of affiliate marketing were announced in front of more than 400 industry specialists at the Award ceremony on Thursday 5th June at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, London.

The event was organised by the largest UK affiliate community, the 24,000 member strong affiliates4u.com (formerly the a4uforum), to reward excellence and innovation of both affiliates and experienced affiliate marketing marketers. The independent judging panel, consisting of some of the most experienced practitioners across the industry, used a 200 points system to choose Virgin Games' affiliate programme for its commercial impact, creativeness and use of innovative tools for affiliates.

Virgin Games was one of only four companies to be shortlisted for the 'Gaming & Casino' Vertical category, and fought off tough competition from other well-established brands such as Jackpotjoy (awarded 'Highly Commended') and Income Access.

Pierrick Leveque, Head of Affiliates, Virgin Games, commented:

"We are overjoyed to be recognised as the winner of the 'Gaming & Casino' Vertical category at the a4uAwards. We were up against some highly reputable brands with well-established affiliate program and are immensely proud to have been awarded the top prize.

"For our work to be recognised by the largest affiliate community in the UK is an honour for Virgin Games, and a testimony to the quality and commitment of the affiliate partners we are working with. As a team, we have gone from strength to strength over the past two years, and we will continue to work hard on our affiliates program to ensure that our partners are provided for many years to come with efficient customer service, a solid reporting system and quality marketing tools."

Matthew Wood, Organiser of the a4uAwards, commented:

"Virgin Games were a very worthy winner. With such a big brand to work with, they could easily rest on their laurels, but this simply isn't the case. They won due to their unquestionable success with figures from the program: growth in both Affiliates wanting to work with them; and the subsequent registrations uplift. Both of which speak volumes."

The Virgin Games' Affiliate program is run by Virgin Games, a wholly owned subsidiary of Virgin.com Ltd. Virgin Games Affiliates has been in operation since 2005, and aims to offer affiliates the reporting and marketing tools they need in order to promote its services efficiently and effectively.

Sixteen prestigious awards were awarded to reflect all areas of affiliate marketing; nine Industry Awards, including five Vertical Sector Categories, and seven Publishers' and Community's Choice Awards.

Andy Transplant Foundation Committee Member Shares Heartbreak and Heart:
Carolina Triangle Realty sponsors VIP After-Party for Satellite World Series of Poker

Raleigh, NC 9 June 2008 - The Andy Transplant Foundation (AFT), established by Susan Thompson in memory of her brother Andy is sponsoring the World Series of Poker satellite event for the first time. Tied to the Las Vegas main event, this local event will be held on June 28th -29th. The winner of the $300 buy-in no-limit hold´em championship goes to Las Vegas to play for 10 million dollars.

When Amy Carden heard about the event, she immediately joined the committee. Amy and Carolina Triangle Realty will sponsor for the VIP after-party with celebrities, sponsors and winners at an estate.

Amy’s brother had been trying for two years with his wife to have a baby. Finally they had the baby but needed a heart immediately. No heart was available. Ten days later the baby died.

Her story was similar to Susan’s. Andy passed away from complications due to liver failure after not getting the transplant he so desperately needed. Soon after diagnosis with liver disease in his early thirties, Andy was placed on the dreaded wait list. While waiting over two years for a donor organ, Andy’s health progressively worsened. Family members and friends came forward and expressed their willingness to become live donors. After an extended and frustrating test period, two acceptable donor candidates were identified but sadly time had run out for Andy who passed away on February 25, 2003 leaving behind a grieving wife and four young children, a sister and parents who loved him deeply.

“One heart, liver or kidney can cost well over $200,000- $300,000 or more. This is only the beginning to help save lives,” says Susan Thompson, President and Founder. “Andy’s Transplant Foundation’s mission is to save lives by creating funding to support transplant research and to increase awareness of the need for individual organ transplant donations.”

The foundation is looking for businesses that will sponsor more tables as a worthy cause. Powerball winners: 'We wont be silly with the money', By Sarah Wotherspoon - Daily Telegraph - 7th June 2008

A casual coffee turned into a $58 million windfall for four Melbourne workmates who scooped the biggest prize in Australian lottery history.

The mystery foursome from Melbourne's northeastern suburbs bought the winning ticket from Reservoir's Lakeside Newsagency on the spur of the moment.

The $32.70 50-game Quick Pick netted the two married and two single men the $58,706,700.13 prize on Thursday night.

"Although we don't know yet what we are going to do with all this money, we are not going to be silly about it," the syndicate organiser said.

"I think we'll invest most of the money and we'll help some charities."

The mystery man said he always thought he would win big on the lottery and looked to the stars on Thursday night and hoped for a win.

He didn't think about it again until he heard yesterday morning that the winning ticket was sold in Reservoir.

He checked the numbers in the paper and went to a different outlet to make sure.

Lakeside Newsagency owner Dean Schultz was overwhelmed when Tatt's spokesman Gerry Devine told him they sold the winning ticket.

"As soon as he introduced himself I knew. He didn't have to say anything. I was in shock, I went white I didn't know what to do," he said.

"We don't know who it is, we get a lot of regulars in here, but when you have a jackpot you also get the people coming in who wouldn't normally buy a ticket.

"To be the biggest one in Australia for a little shop it's fantastic. It's exciting to know you have sold a $58 million ticket."

Mr Schultz said selling the golden ticket was as good as winning and was a perfect way to celebrate clocking up seven years in the business this week.

He congratulated the winners and said he hoped they would come into his shop to say hello.

"I would shake hands. I hope (they) bring a beer in for me," he said.

"I was a bit worried because it wasn't on a card and I thought they might have lost it, so I am really happy."

Mr Schultz's mother Carole, who works in the agency, was ecstatic.

"It's overwhelming and I'm so happy for Dean and the person who won. You cannot think in our mind it's like we have won," she said.

"I tell everyone we are going to sell first prize and no one every believes me but we did."

In the game of Powerball, five balls are drawn from one machine and then a single ball, the Powerball, is drawn from a second machine.

To win the first division prize, players must select all six numbers.

More than 1.3 million entries had a win in Thursday night's game with prizes from $75,000 down to $11.20.

No dice: Crown puts Vegas plan on ice, by Vanda Carson - The Sydney Morning Herald - 5th June 2008

Financiers have failed to support James Packer's ambition to build the world's tallest casino in Las Vegas.

Crown, of which Mr Packer owns 38%, announced yesterday that the plan to build a $5.2 billion casino with American partners had been thwarted by the global credit crunch.

The partners were forced to withdraw as their option to buy the site on the Las Vegas strip expires at the end of the month. They had extended the time to make the final payment several times.

Crown, which had hoped to call the casino Crown Las Vegas, has written off the $44 million it contributed to the joint venture for the deposit to buy the site from vendor Archon Corp.

Crown had a 37.5% stake in the joint venture with partners including Texan developer Chris Milam and private-equity company York Capital Management.

The 11-hectare site is in a prime position on the Las Vegas strip, down the northern end that had been slated for a revival.

The US sharemarket downturn means the revival is under a cloud, with some Las Vegas casinos laying off staff and others experiencing slower turnover.

The owner of Tropicana casino has filed for bankruptcy and four of the largest gambling companies in the US reported earnings slumps in the last quarter.

While gambling has historically been unaffected by slumps in discretionary spending, casino-resorts are no longer immune as almost a third of their earnings are from hotel, restaurant and entertainment facilities.

The site earmarked for Crown Las Vegas was a former Wet'n'Wild slide and pool-based amusement park, one of the last non-gambling related entertainment projects in the centre of Las Vegas. Before Crown's investment, the project had received approval for a 142-storey tower known as Las Vegas Tower. The US Federal Aviation Administration later forced the height to be reduced for fear of causing flight problems with the airport.

The failure does not mean that Mr Packer is left without a presence in Las Vegas. He owns a $300 million stake in the Fontainebleau Resorts casino and hotel development next door, due to open late next year.

Crown also owns three casinos on the Las Vegas outskirts, which are more downmarket and cater for local instead of interstate gamblers.

Crown shares closed 2¢ higher at $10.44.

Take a look at a few records

For more information on the book, head over to the Guinness World Record Gamers Edition website. You will see that there really are very interesting things that every gamer should know. Such as The Legend of Zelda is the longest running action adventure series of all time. The first game was released on the NES in 1986 and the most recent, Phantom Hourglass, was released on the NDS in 2007. Staying in Hyrule, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the highest rated game of all time, earning it 97.7% on Gamerankings.com and 99% on Metacritic.

You might also be interested to know that the first Tomb Raider movie was released in the USA in 2001 and grossed $274 703 340 at cinemas worldwide, making it the most successful film based on a video game. Lara Croft is also the most famous female video game character in the world.

Lara may be famous but Metroid’s Samus Aran takes top honours as the first human female video game star. If players completed the first Metroid within a certain time, it was revealed that Samus was actually a woman.

Going from good video game movies to bad, Street Fighter earned the reputation of the least popular internationally released fighting game spin-off movie ever. Starring Kylie Minogue and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Street Fighter has earned a top spot in the IMDB list of worst movies of all time.

The best selling PS2 game is Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with 15 million copies sold. It is also the most consistently controversial video game in history while GTA is the most successful video game franchise on the PS2.

Tetris is the most ported video game, appearing on 55 different computer game platforms. So you can probably identify with Faiz Chopdat who served the Longest Prison Sentence for Playing A Computer Game after he refused to turn off his Tetris game while on an airplane.

Poker final table, By Sav D’Souza - Molokai Times - 3rd June 2008

The stakes are really hotting up at Paddlers’ Inn. The popular evening poker tournament will culminate in a final tournament Saturday night.

The event started at the end of March and attracted a host of regulars. Some come to sharpen their poker skills, others to beat it out to the final table. Jovial stories of bad beats (unlucky high losing hands) and kindly rivers (landing a great last turned over card) are all part of the laid-back but competitive atmosphere at poker night.

Poker night has become such an institution in the community that now-free Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings will seem something of a void for many.

It’s down to the serious stuff as Molokai’s answer to famous poker players Doyle Brunson and Annie Duke mix it up. From the more than 50 players that have played in the last two months, the final table will host only the top eight Sat. June 7.

Up for grabs at the final table will be a round trip to Las Vegas with two nights stay at the Rio Hotel and a $1,000 buy-in at one of the world poker satellite events, provided courtesy of sponsor Steinlager.

As of May 27, Waika Naki leads the way with 1030 points. He’s followed by Bernice Kalilikane (950); Reyford Stone (930); and Lee Derouin (810). The bottom four are Pete Kamakana, Elizabeth P. Lawrence, Tranq Pascual and Kahealani Maliu. With two nights left before the final standings, those just outside the top eight were hoping to still make it to the final table. Those on top were simply praying to hold on.

The much-anticipated final table will start at 9 p.m. June 7.

Around the WSOP: Star gazing, voting rights and rebuys, By Vin Narayanan - Casino City Times - 3rd June 2008

Star gazing
Sometimes, you don't recognize a single person at a WSOP table. And sometimes, you see Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Isabelle Mercier, Bill Edler, Thomas Keller and Eric Froelich. And that's exactly what happened at Event #4 ($5,000 Mixed Hold'em). But with a field of 332 players including stars like Chad Brown, Freddy Deeb, Eli Elezra, Barry Greenstein, John Hennigan, Phil Ivey, Phil Laak (we could stop name dropping here, but we won't), Ted Lawson, Erick Lindgren, Jeff Madsen, Nenad Medic, Michael Mizrachi, Victor Ramdin, Greg Raymer, Vanessa Rousso, Joe Sebok, Mark Seif and Gavin Smith, you're going to get a few tables like this (especially considering we didn't come close to naming all the top players playing in this event). And if you think busting one of these players out makes table any easier, think again. When Negreanu was forced to the rail, he was replaced at the table by Dewey Tomko.

Voting rights
The next time players at the WSOP vote on something, abstention should not be an option. At 5:45 a.m., with 20 players remaining in Event #2 ($1,500 No Limit Hold'em), the players took a vote on whether to suspend play until later in the afternoon, or keep on playing until a final table was determined. The vote was a tie with several players abstaining. ABSTAINING. Come on poker players. You can't ABSTAIN. It's not a nuclear disarmament agreement. It's poker. When the field was narrowed to 18 players, there was another vote (where apparently, not everyone participated again). But this time, the players voted to suspend play. And for those keeping score at home, Chris Ferguson has made the final 18 of this event. He's currently in 14th place.

Rebuy!
Rebuy tournaments can be fun to watch because players can (and will) go a bit nuts in terms pushing the action because they know they can always rebuy to stay into the tournament. For those of you who think the term nuts is a bit harsh, consider the fact that PokerNews is reporting Phil Ivey was sitting at a table in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em with rebuys tournament (Event #5) with $100,000 in casino chips so he continue to rebuy if play warranted it. And at another table, there have already been 58 rebuys. Wow!!

All bets are off for Packer's Las Vegas casino, by Vanda Carson - The Sydney Morning Herald - 5th June 2008

James Packer's ambitious roll of the dice aimed at creating the world's tallest casino has failed to come up with the right numbers, with financiers failing to support the Las Vegas project.

Crown Ltd, of which Mr Packer owns 38 per cent, yesterday announced that plans to build a $5.2 billion casino with American partners had been thwarted by the global credit crunch.

The decision to pull the plug comes after the plan to transform an empty block of land into a casino and hotel development was effectively put on life support about three months ago.

The partners were forced to call it quits as their option to buy the prime building site on the Las Vegas strip was due to expire at the end of the month. They had previously extended the time given to hand over the final purchase payment several times.

Crown, which had hoped to call the casino Crown Las Vegas, has been forced to write off the $44 million it contributed to the joint venture for the deposit to buy the site from the vendor Archon Corp.

Crown had a 37.5 per cent stake in the joint venture, with partners including a Texan developer Chris Milam and US private-equity firm York Capital Management.

The 11-hectare site was in a prime position on the Las Vegas strip at the northern end, which had been slated for a revival. However, the US sharemarket downturn means this is now under a cloud, with some casinos in Las Vegas laying off staff and others seeing a slowdown in turnover.

Already the owner of the iconic Tropicana casino has filed for bankruptcy and four of the US's largest gambling companies have reported earnings slumps in the previous quarter.

While historically gambling has been unaffected by slumps in discretionary spending, it is no longer immune as it gains almost a third of earnings from hotel, restaurant and entertainment facilities within casino-resorts.

The site that was earmarked for the Crown Las Vegas was a former Wet'n'Wild water amusement park - one of the last non-gambling related entertainment projects within the centre of Las Vegas.

Prior to Crown's investment, the project had received approval for a 142-storey tower known as Las Vegas Tower. However, the US Federal Aviation Administration later forced this to be reduced for fear of causing flight problems with the local airport.

When Mr Milam bought the site two years ago the opportunities to borrow money were much greater and Las Vegas was booming. He said at the time that financing the project would not be a problem.

"There seems to be very little lack of capital in Las Vegas," he reportedly said.

He had hoped to start building by 2007 and to open the casinos doors by 2010.

The failure does not mean that Mr Packer is left without a presence in Las Vegas, as Crown still owns a $300 million stake in a partially-built casino right next door. The Fontainebleau Las Vegas development is on track to open late next year.

Crown also owns three casinos on the outskirts of Las Vegas, which are much more downmarket and cater for local, as opposed to interstate, gamblers.

Crown scraps Las Vegas casino - The Sydney Morning Herald - 4th June 2008

The developers of a $US5 billion ($A5.2 billion) Las Vegas casino have decided to scrap the project due to tight credit markets, one of the developers, Crown Ltd said.

Crown said it would write off its $44 million investment in the project.

Casino firm Crown, owned by billionaire James Packer, along with Texas developer Christopher Milam and private equity firm York Capital Management, had planned to build the tallest tower in Las Vegas as part of the casino complex and 5000-room hotel project.

Crown chief executive Rowen Craigie said following a strategic review it had stopped making payments to the vendors of the former Wet 'n' Wild site at the northern end of Las Vegas's famed Strip.

''The recent upheavals in world credit markets have made it increasingly difficult for Crown and its partners to develop a commercially viable project on what remains an attractive location on the Las Vegas strip,'' Craigie said in a statement.

The move follows reports at the end of March that the development group had failed to find another equity partner to meet its lenders' demands.

Crown shares were up as much as 0.3%, or 3 cents, at $10.45 in early trade.

Casino mogul hosts wounded soldiers in Vegas, By OSKAR GARCIA – May 25, 2008

LAS VEGAS (AP) — All too familiar with the gambles of war, Jimmy Kinsey, Kyle Riley and a few dozen fellow soldiers landed in the desert. But for these guys this Memorial Day, the most at stake is a few bucks.

The soldiers-turned-high rollers took a private jet to Las Vegas over the weekend for an all-expenses-paid getaway with all the perks normally saved for casinos' richest regulars.

They were greeted at the airport by Wayne Newton, chilled backstage with the guys from Blue Man Group and hobnobbed with Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino mogul who runs Las Vegas Sands Corp. and paid for the trip.

The trip, organized by the Armed Forces Foundation, brought 40 wounded soldiers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and the National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, Md., to the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

"I'm gonna be bragging about this for a long while," said Kinsey, 23, while hanging out in his penthouse overlooking the nearby Wynn Golf Course. Each of the soldiers, mostly in their 20s, stayed in a penthouse, and several who came alone got one to themselves.

Kinsey, a Marine corporal from Foley, Ala., who lost part of his left leg to an improvised explosive device in Iraq in 2006, said he hadn't spent too much time gambling — just a few slots.

"On a scale from one to 10 I gave this trip a 15 when I got on the plane," he said.

Riley, a 21-year-old from Catlett, Va., who also lost part of his left leg to an IED in Iraq, was so overwhelmed by the trip he decided with his fiancee, Alyssa Mergler, to make it their wedding weekend. They planned to wed Monday on a gold and white gondola, courtesy of Adelson, whom Mergler said insisted on having his staff handle the plans.

Mergler, 21, said a wedding coordinator showed up at their suite with a thick book of flower choices.

"I don't have the money to do that," said Riley, who asked Kinsey to be his best man.

Armed Forces Foundation officials said the trip was a dream distraction from the everyday life at the hospitals, where the soldiers lived while recovering from their injuries.

Armed Forces Foundation spokesman Doug Stone said the trip would be the first of many, and said Adelson wanted to eventually extend the all-expenses-paid offer to every veteran who had been admitted to the two hospitals.

A spokesman for Adelson said the executive was not available for comment because he was traveling.

One Way to Help the Troops: Send Them to Vegas - The Wall Street Journal

The war in Iraq war spawned all sorts of charities to help returning soldiers. But Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino king, has decided to help the war effort in his own way: by bringing wounded soldiers to Vegas.

According to this Associated Press article by Oskar Garcia, Mr. Adelson brought 40 wounded soldiers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center to Vegas for Memorial Day weekend. The soldiers flew out in a private jet, met Wayne Newton at the airport, hung out backstage with the Blue Man Group and got rooms at the Venetian, Mr. Adelson’s mega-casino.

Mr. Adelson picked up the tab for everything, except the gambling.

The soldiers said they loved it: One said that “on a scale of one to 10 I gave this trip a 15 when I got on the plane.”

Kyle Riley, a 21-year-old solider from Catlett, Va., who lost part of his leg to an IED, decided to make the trip his wedding weekend and got married. Mr. Adelson and his staff picked up the cost of that too.

According to the article, Mr. Adelson plans to extend the trip invite to all veterans who have been through Walter Reed or the Naval Medical Center.

Is sending wounded soldiers to Vegas tacky? Maybe. Are there better ways to help the soliders? Probably. But the important thing is that the soldiers enjoyed it.

Mr. Adelson has become a lightning rod for critics of the war, since he’s been a huge supporter. He is one of the richest and most generous Republican donors, and he helped fund a multi-million-dollar media campaign to support the troop surge.

But whatever people think of his politics, at least he’s reaching out to the soliders. While everyone talks about supporting the troops and helping the wounded, Mr. Adelson has backed up his words with actions. He did something. And for that — politics aside — he should be commended.

All bets are off at the casino ..., by Daniel Emerson - The Sydney Morning Herald - 3rd June 2008

Maintenance workers poised to reopen Star City casino after six hours of routine electrical checks have a message for Pyrmont - get ready for a stampede.

Workers outside the casino today said the corresponding closure last year ended with traffic chaos in Pyrmont as hundreds of gamblers itching for their fix choked roads around the complex.

Ron Stewart, operations manager for Commercial Energy Services, the company contracted to carry out maintenance and upgrades to alarms and lighting systems, said workers were subjected to many a filthy look and the odd insult from punters lining up to get in last year.

"Pretty much anyone in a worker overalls copped it," he said today outside the casino.

"There were traffic jams last year, people lining up just to get in the foyer and waiting to get up the escalators.

"I hope to be out of here by that time today. I couldn't get out of the place last year."

The casino set up flashing signs on roads around Pyrmont this week and last week to warn gamblers of the closure between 9am and 3pm today, but a quick walk around the complex today proved that many didn't get the memo.

"It's not open 'til three mate - bloody annoying," offered one man before shuffling away, apparently walking laps around the premises.

A procession of foreign gambling hopefuls looked confused and occasionally agitated as they approached every entrance on Pirrama Road and Jones Bay Road only to be repeatedly denied by plastic tape and security guards.

Star City hotel front office assistant manager Ryan Patterson said there were only a few gamblers on the casino floor when staff asked them to leave this morning and all of them went quietly.

Guests who arrived at the hotel to check in were being directed to the nearby Maritime Museum cafe on Murray Street for free coffee and cake, he said.

A Star City spokeswoman said the casino had not estimated how much lost revenue the six-hour closure would cause.

Casino mogul James Packer leaves Scientology behind

Scientology has lost one of it's most prominent members - casino mogul James Packer. According to the latest reports, the media and gambling mogul, who had ranked as Scientology's wealthiest member in the world, believes he no longer needs the religion he was introduced to by high profile Scientologist and friend Tom Cruise, causing a big blow to the organization. Some suggest James Packer's expanding casino empire has presented issues difficult to reconcile with Scientologist beliefs - Scientology's founder, science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, denounced gambling.

James parker, who is currently Australia's second richest man, is the son of the late billionaire media mogul Kerry Packer, James Packer is the Executive Chairman of Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL), but unlike his father, he is focusing on expanding the business to gambling with the latest purchase of the Burswood Entertainment Complex in Perth, Australia, and online gambling, as well - PBL holds 50% stake in the online gambling firm Betfair. Packer also owns Melbourne's Crown Casino, Australia's largest casino, as well as allegedly working on casino projects in Maccau and Great Britain.

Woman shot at casino - The Sydney Morning Herald - 8th May 2008

A woman has reportedly been shot three times at Star City Casino this afternoon.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they had a crew at the casino in Pyrmont.

It is understood the 30-year-old woman was shot three times in her chest.

She is being taken to Sydney Hospital, according to an ambulance spokesman, suffering multiple gun shot wounds.

Police are also responding as the area prepares for the arrival this afternoon of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who is officially opening Fairfax Media's new headquarters at One Darling Island, near the casino.

The shooting does not appear to have stopped gambling or other activities at the casino and no-one has been evacuated from the complex.

Comment was being sought from police and the casino.

Chinese clamp boosts Packer, by Peter Gosnell - The Daily Telegraph - 6th May 2008

The Chinese freeze on Macau-centric casino developers is being touted as good news for gambling mogul James Packer and his Asian gambling play, Melco PBL Entertainment.

Analysts said yesterday the Chinese Government's recent decision to place a moratorium on new casino construction would limit competition in the freewheeling former Portuguese enclave.

They said that when combined with the natural enthusiasm of Chinese punters and Melco's recent improvement in attracting gamblers through its doors, the value of Melco PBL Entertainment shares could rise by 50 per cent over the next few years.

"This is a very interesting story and one worth revisiting," Philip Ehrmann, an Asia specialist and long-term Macau sceptic at Jupiter Asset management in London said yesterday.

Mr Packer owns a 37 per cent stake in Melco PBL Entertainment through Crown Ltd, the locally-listed holding company which holds his gambling interests.

These include Crown Casino in Melbourne, Burswood Casino in Perth, his Betfair Australasia joint venture and stakes in Canada's Gateway group, Aspinall Holdings (Jersey) Holdings, Fontainbleau Equity Holdings, the LVTI joint venue in Las Vegas and the soon to be ratified purchase of Cannery Casino Resorts, which operates four casinos in Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Melco PBL Entertainment - which plans to change its name to Melco Crown Entertainment at an annual meeting of shareholders later this month - owns and operates the Crown Macau Casino in Macau.

Mr Packer and his Melco co-founder Lawrence Ho are building the $2.3 billion City of Dreams casino resort and have plans for a combined casino, resort and residential complex on the Macau peninsular waterfront.

The upbeat appraisal represents a solitary gleam among a sector currently in the shadow of a global resources boom.

Melco and several rivals have been hit hard in the past year as more casinos opened in Macau, increasing competition and driving down margins as they fought for customers.

And in the US, shares in Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts have been pounded by fears of a weak US economy.

Locally the news has been equally gloomy, with analysts downgrading their earnings forecasts for poker machine maker Aristocrat as higher costs eat into declining sales volumes.

Meanwhile, Tabcorp Holdings and Tatts Group have yet to recover from the blow dealt last month when the Victorian Government decreed their duopoly controlling the state's 27,500 poker machine licenses would end when their permits expire in 2012.

In first half 2008, revenue from gaming contributed 25 per cent of Tabcorp's earnings before interest and tax.

Both parties are believed to be still considering legal advice in respect of more than $1 billion in compensation they believe is now owed to them by the Victorian Government.

Macao casino move cheers markets, by Tom Mitchell and Robin Kwong - Union Network - 24th April 2008

The Macao government’s decision, announced on Tuesday, to rein back rapid growth in the world’s largest gaming market has been a long time in the making.

Edmund Ho, chief executive of the Chinese special administrative region, said his government would – among other measures – extend a moratorium on the number of licensed casino operators in the territory, halt land allocations for new gaming investments and restrict expansion plans at existing casinos.

Revealed at an otherwise routine question-and-answer session with Macao legislators, Mr Ho’s shot across the bow initially shocked the market, then cheered it. Share prices of US and Hong Kong-listed companies with gaming interests in Macao surged on the news.

“It stops unfettered competition,” said one industry executive, who is nonetheless anxious to see the fine print from Mr Ho. “People can’t just come in and set up casinos. It will drive profitability per table up.”

The growth of Macao’s casino industry has surged in recent months, especially noticeable in a city with a population of just 500,000. In the first quarter of this year gaming revenues increased more than 60 per cent year on year to $3.72bn – more than the Las Vegas Strip and Atlantic City combined.

Measures announced by Edmund Ho
● Total number of licences and sub-concessions to be frozen at six “for the foreseeable future”
● No more land allocations for new casino development, although “we will continue to work with those who have begun construction or negotiations”
● Increases in the number of gaming tables and slot machines at existing casinos to be “tightly restricted” pending government review of casino industry policy.
● Junket commissions to be “regulated in accordance with law”
● Possible introduction of government licensing requirement for “all high-ranking casino executives”
● Ban on casino company involvement in other sectors, especially “public services” such as transport

“We have to ensure our continued economic growth – but also resolve the new problems that have arisen as a result of [it],” Mr Ho said.

“This move reflects the Macao government’s concerns – and probably also Beijing’s – about the side-effects of the gambling boom,” says Au Kam-san, a pro-democracy legislator who has long been critical of Mr Ho’s administration. “The gaming industry’s explosive growth has already exceeded the capacity of Macao’s limited resources.”

The Macao government’s angst can be traced back to early last year when Jorge Oliveira, an influential policy official at the territory’s gaming commission, e-mailed senior casino executives the March cover article from Macau Business, an English-language monthly magazine. The article’s headline was unambiguous: “The Game’s Up: Revenue sharing threatens the system; Gov moves to block new players”.
At that time Macao had just eclipsed the Las Vegas Strip as the world’s largest gambling market, vindicating the government’s decision five years earlier to terminate tycoon Stanley Ho’s monopoly in the industry. Five players were ushered in including Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands, which has opened the world’s two largest casinos in the territory, Steve Wynn’s Wynn Resorts and MGM Mirage, which formed a joint venture with Mr Ho’s daughter, Pansy.

But all was not well in Macao. The government was worried about “revenue sharing” or “franchise” agreements, under which outside parties piggy-backed off the licences of established players. Mr Ho’s gaming flagship, Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, had pioneered these arrangements, running casinos for partners who bore most of the properties’ investment risk.

Although typically involving businessmen and companies little-known outside Hong Kong and Macao, bigger fish were beginning to surface as well. In January of last year, Sir Richard Branson told the FT the Virgin Group intended to open a $3bn Macao gaming resort in co-operation with a licensed casino operator. Sir Richard’s public enthusiasm was the final straw for Macao government regulators. “That was probably not the best way to do business in China,” says one person familiar with Virgin’s approach. For its part, Virgin says it is still exploring opportunities in the territory.

The Macao government’s skittishness was aggravated by anti-government protests on May 1 last year – the largest since the former Portuguese colony reverted to Chinese sovereignty in 1999 – as people complained the boom had left them behind. In his remarks on Tuesday, Edmund Ho said the government would pay every Macao resident 5,000 patacas ($625) from its overflowing fiscal surplus – a sop that could damp turn-out at next week’s May Day march.

Further illustrating the stress the casino industry is putting on Macao’s social and physical infrastructure, the Venetian Macao – the world’s largest casino – opened in August with 15,000 employees, 5 per cent of the territory’s workforce. When William Weidner, Las Vegas Sands president, spoke of his new property as “the casino that ate Macao”, his joke struck some as being too close to the bone.

In this context, Edmund Ho’s announcement was perhaps inevitable. But as one senior casino executive says: “The government must get the new regulations out quickly so the industry knows what they are talking about. So far it’s only been a lot of froth.”

Is online gambling empire Bodog losing top dog?, by David Baines, Vancouver Sun - 22nd April 2008

Maverick Canadian businessman and part-time Vancouver resident Calvin Ayre says he has quit Bodog, the online gambling empire that brought him fame, fortune and heat.

"It's true, I'm packing it in," Ayre announced Monday on Bodog's website.

"I'm totally surprised. It's the last thing I would have expected," said Chris Costigan, publisher of Gambling911.com, which closely follows the online gambling industry, in an interview from Miami Beach, Fla.

"I don't know how somebody could go from being the centre of attention to a recluse," Costigan said. "Whether he can keep that up, I somehow doubt it."

Ayre, now 47, became involved in the online gambling industry in the late 1990s, and introduced Bodog in 2000.

He promoted Bodog as a lifestyle, along the lines of Richard Branson's Virgin and Hugh Hefner's Playboy. He also diversified into music, mixed martial arts and film, which attracted more attention to the website.

By 2006, the company was generating more than $7 billion US in wagers, making it the seventh-largest online gambling company in the world.

That same year, Forbes magazine featured Ayre on the cover of its March issue as one of the world's 794 billionaires. People magazine named him one of its 40 hottest bachelors.

Ayre lived in a multi-million-dollar compound in Costa Rica (he has since moved to Antigua) and maintained a $6.2-million penthouse in Yaletown.

He also ran two related business in Metro Vancouver. One was Riptown Media, which employed close to 250 people in advertising and marketing support in downtown Vancouver. The other was Triple Crown Customer Service, which employed an estimated 200 people in customer account services in Burnaby.

By all appearances, Ayre was living a charmed life. Then his past came back to haunt him.

Reporters revealed he had been implicated in a marijuana-trafficking ring in 1987. He was not charged, but his father and brother in law received lengthy jail terms.

Reporters also revealed he was involved in a shady Vancouver company called Bicer Medical Systems. In 1996, he admitted to serious stock offences and agreed to a 20-year suspension from the B.C. securities market.

Meanwhile, U.S. Department of Justice officials stepped up their war on online gambling. They made it clear they had Ayre in their crosshairs. Fearing arrest, he stayed clear of U.S. soil.

His announced departure may indicate he has tired of the cat-and-mouse game with U.S. authorities. On the other hand, it may signal a renewal of that same game.

As well as announcing his departure, Ayre announced he had transferred ownership of Bodog last year to the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group, which runs hundreds of gaming websites from the Kahnawake reserve near Montreal.

"I was really more of a brand ambassador for Bodog the past while anyway -- but it was fun while it lasted," he said on the Bodog website.

This was news indeed. Last September, Ayre announced he had licensed Bodog's North American operations to the Morris Mohawk Group, but there was no indication he had transferred ownership.

Rudd needs to play cards right on Pay TV gambling, by Bernard Keane - Crikey - 22nd April 2008

The Opposition will today challenge Kevin Rudd to walk the walk on gambling by banning Pay TV gambling services.

This morning, interactive media company Two Way announced the launch of its Sky Racing ACTIVE service, developed with Tabcorp and Foxtel. The service is available in NSW and Victoria and provides racing-related information for those who like to bet on watching short men flog large animals round paddocks. In Victoria, however, punters will also be able to bet on races via their Pay TV service.

The NSW Government refused to approve gambling via Pay TV, but the Victorian Government ticked off on the service in February, allowing Tabcorp account holders to wager from their sofas.

While online and telephone betting on the nags and dogs is currently permitted, the Pay TV gambling initiative (presumably, to use interactive media parlance, "lean back gambling" rather than the lean forward variety offered by the internet) outraged anti-gambling advocates like Tim Costello and Nick Xenophon, who criticised it as turning the lounge room into a gambling den. The Victorian Opposition quipped that it allowed punters to lose their homes without leaving it.

Kevin Rudd, of course, is at one with the professional handwringers over gambling. It’s barely a month since he ordered - guess what - a review of problem gambling, to be led by Jenny Macklin. It came at the same time as he pressured Victoria into committing to the long-term removal of ATMs from gambling venues.

Brendan Nelson and low-profile shadow Communications Minister Bruce Billson will challenge Rudd to use the Commonwealth’s control over broadcasting regulation to ban the Two Way service. Minister for Zeroes and Ones, Stephen Conroy, is also in charge of broadcasting regulation, and a ban would pit him squarely against not merely Victorian Right factional colleague John Brumby but Two Way backer Sam Chisholm and James Packer, who controls 25% of Foxtel.

Nelson has lobbied Rudd on gambling on several occasions, including publicly requesting another Productivity Commission inquiry, specifically into poker machines. Crikey understands Nelson has also raised gambling privately with Rudd. Undoubtedly both men are serious on the issue, although with Steve Fielding and Nick Xenophon occupying key positions in the Senate after June, you’d suspect there’s more than a small element of political calculation in Rudd’s positioning.

With both the Coalition and Fielding on side, an amendment to the Broadcasting Services Act to deprive punters of this semi-new way pay the tax on innumeracy that is gambling would be simple to pass. The question is whether Rudd is happy to send Conroy full-tilt into his mates in the Victorian Government, and upset some powerful media types as well. Otherwise, the anti-gambling crowd will have reason to wonder whether the Prime Minister is indeed much talk but little substance.

Packer's Melco casino's new boss, by Glenda Korporaal - The Australian - 26th April 2008

James Packer's US-listed Macau casino company, Melco PBL Entertainment, has appointed Mirvac chairman James Mackenzie to its board.

The company announced the appointment yesterday following the resignation of director David Elmsie, who has become chief operating officer of the international business of Mr Packer's Crown Limited.

Mr Mackenzie, who is based in Melbourne, will chair the audit committee.

Melco PBL, which listed on US over-the-counter market, Nasdaq, in December 2006, owns the Crown Macau casino in Macau, where it is also building the $2.3 billion City of Dreams and has plans for a third hotel/casino development.

Crown Limited has a 37.9 per cent stake in Melco PBL, along with the Hong Kong-based Melco, which is run by Lawrence Ho, son of Macau casino veteran Stanley Ho.

Mr Mackenzie is a former chairman of the Victorian Workcover Authority, managing director of funds management and insurance with ANZ, chief executive of Norwich Union Australia and chairman of Victoria's Transport Accident Commission.

The former partner of accounting firm Deloitte also spent 10 years working in Asia and Britain, and on assignment in mainland Europe and the US.

Melco PBL shares have had a rocky time since listing in the US over a year ago at $US19 a share, following the downturn in world share markets and investors' uncertainty over higher risk and speculative investments. The company's shares fell to a low of $US8.20 before rising to their current price of $US13.85 ($14.87) after a share-buying exercise last year.

It received a boost this week with news from Macau that the government had no immediate plans to offer any more casino licences in the territory, bolstering the position of the six existing licence holders.

Hi-tech pokies chase young gamers, by Clare Masters - Daily Telegraph -22nd April 2008

# Gambling machines could get videogame-style graphics
# Gen Y gamblers could be lured in with customisation features

A NEW futuristic line of poker machines with Xbox-style graphics will rake in a younger generation of gamblers according to experts.

The hi-tech machines will use better graphics and interactive technology to appeal to junior punters and will be designed to be as versatile as a home computer.

The plan for more sophisticated, hi-tech pokies was canvassed at a recent Future Trends in Gaming conference in Queensland, where major industry organisations outlined their vision to attract younger players.

"I don't think (gaming rooms) are an environment Generation Y wants to be in. They get bored easily," Justin Brown of Aristocrat Leisure Industries told the conference.

"How do we get them into venues? Group activities and games are the way of the future - as are challenges and tournaments."

An Aristocrat spokesman told The Daily Telegraph Mr Brown declined to comment further but confirmed he had made the statements.

Ross Ferrar, from the Australasian Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association, backed the plan, saying gaming machines needed to be updated to be more in line with 21st century technology.

"At the end of the day where all this is headed is making the equipment more similar to mass IT equipment," he said.

"Gen Y wants to do things like change the background colour or put their favourite character in."

The plan was condemned by anti-pokie advocates, who said it was a manoeuvre to rope in new gamblers.

"It is fundamental to their business plan to target (Generation Y), there is so much money at stake," World Vision Australia chief executive Tim Costello said.

The State Government is also alarmed about the spike in young pokie punters and has commissioned a study into help for junior gambling addicts.

The move follows a report that found young men who left school at Year 10 were over-represented among problem gamblers.

"I am concerned that research has shown that problem gamblers are more likely to be 18 to 24-year-old males," a spokeswoman for Gaming Minister Graham West said.

The Government is working on a campaign that will use internet and SMS technologies to educate young gamblers.

Mr Ferrar said the shift towards more user-friendly machines was partly because of younger gaming designers.

"It may be more appealing to Gen Y but it's also about making the game as entertaining as possible to everyone," he said.

He said there was a 10-step process of gaining approval for new games, which could take up to three years.

Greg Tingle comment:

What about online gaming. Have a look at Virgin Casino, 888 and Golden Palace for example. I think its too late for the clubs to cash in on the young. The internet is where the actions at.
