APT Ambassador JC Tran Dominates PartyPoker.com Premier League III
26th November 2008 (London, UK) – Asian Poker Tour ambassador JC Tran’s excellent run at PartyPoker.com Premier League III has continued after he won his first two heats and finished runner-up in his third. JC now sits clearly at the top of the table with 26 points at the $1.25 million event for 12 elite players in London.
Tran, who is also representing team PKR, won his first heat on day one at the expense of World Champion Peter Eastgate and has continued his great form. Cheered on by a large contingent in the green room, including WSOP Main Event final table pal David ‘Chino’ Rheem, and ‘Poker Pack’ pals Nam Le and Quinn Do he put on other great display. When it got heads-up he held 476,000 to Vicky Coren’s 124,000 and he looked the likely winner throughout. The decisive hand saw Tran raise with A6 off-suit and pushed all-in by Coren with KK. An ace on the flop was enough to take it down.
JC’s third heat was hugely eventful. All the previous heats had seen very few eliminations in early levels but this game was different and it very quickly become a heads-up battle between JC and Peter Eastgate. The 2008 WSOP Main Event champion completely run over the field and looked to be home and dry but the blinds were only at 2,000 – 4,000. Eastgate sat with 541,000 to Tran’s 59,000, a very different scenario to when the pair met on day one when the chip counts going into the heads-up stage were more level. Remarkably, as a 9-1 underdog, Tran fought back to hold the chip lead. Eastgate, however, eventually got his revenge for his defeat at the hands of Tran on day one to pick up 10 points. Eastgate pushed all-in with K3 and was called by Tran with A7. A king on the flop was enough to seal the deal for the $9 million Dane. With 6 points from the heat, however, JC is the man to beat and holds a very comfortable lead at the top of the league table and he looks set to qualify for the deep stacked final table on Sunday.
JC said: “It’s going great here in London, maybe I should move here! I was very pleased to come back in the heads-up after being a 9-1 dog but I was confident there was a way back as there was still so much play left at the table. It is a shame I couldn’t eventually win this heat but I am very happy with 26 points and topping the table.”
PartyPoker.com Premier League III sees the buy-in elevated to $75,000 and the added money raised to $350,000, making a total prize pool of $1.25 million. The series features 12 of the world’s best players playing in a unique league format. All 12 players will play six times in the preliminary stages. The leading four players will then progress to the final table with the next four battling it out in heads-up matches for the final two seats. Phil Hellmuth leads the strongest ever line-up that includes Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan, JC Tran, Nenad Medic, Devilfish, Tony G, Vicky Coren, Annette Obrestad, Roland de Wolfe, Andy Black, Juha Helppi and WSOP Main Event winner Peter Eastgate.

Online Poker Named in Anurag Dikshit Legal Case, by Dan Cypra - Poker News Daily - 23rd December 2008
Last week saw Party Gaming Co-Founder Anurag Dikshit admit wrongdoing under the Wire Act of 1961. He agreed to pay $300 million to United States Federal authorities in the process, $100 million of which has already been turned over. A review of the filing against Dikshit reveals that online poker was specifically named in the case.
The Wire Act has typically only applied to online wagering on sporting events. However, in this case, online poker was specifically called out. Dikshit, who appeared in front of the Southern District Court of New York, was charged with “being engaged in the business of betting and wagering, [and] unlawfully, willfully, and knowingly [using] a wire communication facility for the transmission in interstate and foreign commerce of bets and wagers on any sporting event and contest.”
Dikshit was involved in building Party Gaming’s software platform between 1998 and 2006. Beginning in 1999 and lasting for the next seven years, he served as one of the company’s principal shareholders. News reports stated that Dikshit currently owns 27% of Party Gaming, which is traded on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol “PRTY.” The stock boomed when word spread of his agreement with U.S. authorities, one of the first such accords reached since the 2006 passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Background given in the three page filing indicates that Dikshit “operated an internet gambling business that offered casino and poker games, among other games of chance, to customers who wished to wager online.” The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the main lobbying group for the online poker industry, commented on the situation by saying, “We do believe this action further clouds the U.S. regulatory and legal environment as it relates to online poker.” The PPA added that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Wire Act should only apply to online wagering on sports. The UIGEA does not specify what is and is not legal under it.
When the UIGEA was passed during the final moments of the 2006 Congressional session, PartyPoker was one of the first online poker rooms to exit the market. Other publicly traded internet gambling companies include 888 and SportingBet, which also appear on the London Stock Exchange under the symbols “888” and “SBT,” respectively. Pacific Poker and Paradise Poker, which are owned by the two aforementioned companies, have also exited the market.
Since the 2006 law was passed, a cloud has hung over the heads of Party Gaming and others in the market, which could potentially stunt future business opportunities. Dikshit’s move may help to clear the air. The charge notes that about 85% of Party Gaming’s customers in 2005 were from the United States. At the time, PartyPoker was one of the largest online poker rooms on the planet, even hosting an event held as part of the World Poker Tour.
At the close of business on Monday, PRTY stock was down ₤12.25 to ₤189.75. Its 52 week range has been an erratic one, vacillating between ₤17.50 and ₤312.00. It’s been a roller coaster ride for shareholders. However, the stock has nearly doubled from ₤95.00, which it closed at on November 19th. The case involving Dikshit received international attention and many major news outlets believed that an important precedent would be set one way or another.
Dikshit resides in Gibraltar and is originally from India. His travel agreements allow him to visit Manhattan in the United States. The New York court is located in White Plains. (Credit: Poker News Daily)

Poker to feature in Bond-themed evening - 19th December 2008
Hebden Bridge Picture house is hosting a Bond-themed evening on December 20th.
Those who attend will watch a screening of Daniel Craig's latest outing as 007 Quantum of Solace and then move to B@r Place for a casino night, reports the Halifax Courier.
Customers have been invited to turn up in their tuxedos and cocktail dresses, or even dressed as their favourite Bond characters.
There will be alcohol-free cocktails at the cinema as well as canapes and a live jazz band.
After the screening poker fans will be able to hit the felt, where they will be entertained by a video DJ.
While poker is most commonly associated with Craig's Bond because it made up a large part of the story in Casino Royale - his first outing - there will also be roulette and blackjack.
The first glimpse of Bond in the inaugural film of the franchise Dr No sees him sitting at a table playing Chemin de Fer with Sylvia Trench at Les Ambassadeurs Club in London.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – With the success of its two events in 2008 and an expanded schedule on the horizon for 2009, the Asian Poker Tour (APT) is getting the full support of some of the world’s biggest online poker rooms.
No less than the iPoker Network, PartyPoker, and Everest Poker – the third, fourth, and sixth largest online poker rooms in the world respectively – will be backing the Asian Poker Tour and sending over their best players to participate in its events next year. Top online poker rooms such as PKR, the Microgaming Network, Poker Trillion, World3DPoker, 888.com, the National Poker League (NPL), and JBET poker will be giving their support and sending players to APT tournaments as well. Together, the poker rooms mentioned combine to reach a substantial percentage of poker players around the world.
The Asian Poker Tour recently announced its first event for next year – APT Philippines 2009. It will be held from January 27 to February 1, 2009 at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel in Makati City, Philippines with a buy-in of USD $2,700.
Asian Poker Tour CEO Chris Parker is optimistic about the growing strength of the Tour, especially with the large number of players expected to qualify through its online poker room partners.
“With so many players coming in through our online partners, we are looking to exceed the number of players who participated in last year’s Manila event,” said Parker. “The support of all of these online poker rooms is a testament to the growth of poker in Asia, especially the Asian Poker Tour.”

Party Gaming Founder Anurag Dikshit Pleads Guilty in U.S. Court, by Dan Cypra - Poker News Daily - 17th December 2008
On Tuesday, PartyGaming founder Anurag Dikshit pled guilty to violating the Wire Act of 1961 in the Southern District Court of New York. Judge Jed Rakoff scheduled sentencing for December 16th, 2010, according to Bloomberg News. Dikshit posted a $50 million bond and will fork over $300 million in three installments to the United States Government.
Bloomberg quoted Dikshit as saying that Party Gaming accepting customers from the United States “was in fact illegal under U.S. law. I have taken full responsibility for my actions.” The owner of 27% of Party Gaming and its largest shareholder, Dikshit has already paid $100 million, agreed to pay another $100 million within three months, and will post an additional $100 million by September 30th, 2009. An Associated Press article notes that Forbes indicated Dikshit was worth a whopping $1.6 billion in 2007.
Other large-scale owners of Party Gaming, which is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol “PRTY,” include Ruth Parasol and Russ DeLeon, each of whom holds a 17% interest in the company. Neither member of the husband and wife team has yet made any agreement with the United States Government. The penalty for violating the Wire Act is up to two years in prison. It’s unknown whether the prosecution will seek that length for Dikshit. The Party Gaming owner traveled to the U.S. under his own accord.
Party Gaming’s stock rose dramatically on the prospect that Dikshit’s settlement with the United States Government may help clear the way for the company’s return to the market should internet gambling become legalized in the future. Last Friday, PRTY stock had traded as low as ₤119. It ballooned over 25% on the day at the time of writing, up ₤37.75 to ₤176.50. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock price has wavered between a low of ₤17.50 and a high of ₤312.00.
Last year, Party Gaming entered negotiations with the U.S. to clear the air legally about its actions prior to the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in 2006. The statement by the company to the London Stock Exchange revealed, “The Company’s discussions with the DoJ have made good progress and it is currently negotiating the final terms of a possible settlement. Whilst these discussions are at an advanced stage, the terms of any settlement have not yet been finalized and there can be no guarantee that an agreement will be reached.”
The company’s online poker room, PartyPoker, exited the U.S. market in late 2006 upon the passage of the UIGEA. Paradise Poker and other sites owned by publicly-traded firms left the market as well, leaving PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, both privately owned, as the world’s two largest rooms. As late as 2005, the PartyPoker Million was a World Poker Tour stop.
Various news sources differ in the amount of bail, if any, that Dikshit posted on Tuesday. However, the Financial Times noted that the terms of his agreement allow him to travel to any country in the European Union, Manhattan (in the United States), India, and Gibraltar, which is where he currently takes up residence.
Sportingbet and 888, both publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange, saw their shares rise as well as a result of Dikshit’s settlement. 888 was up ₤10.00 to ₤79.75. Sportingbet (which is traded under the symbol “SBT”) was up ₤3.00 to ₤30.00. Party Gaming is expected to release another statement in the coming days providing a reaction to Tuesday’s news.
The hearing took place this afternoon in White Plains, New York at 2:00pm Eastern Time. A call placed to Judge Rakoff’s chambers revealed that a plethora of news outlets attended the proceedings, which will likely set a major precedent on how running an internet gambling site is prosecuted in the United States.
