Game's growth has been great, and it'll only get bigger, by Joe Hachem - 5th December 2009

With the grand final of the PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tournament (APPT) rolling into Sydney this week attracting poker players from across the world to the Star City's brand-new poker room, it's an interesting time to reflect on how far poker has come in Australia.

Just 23 years ago there was no poker being played in casinos in this country. As one of the most high-profile and high-stakes casino games, poker is now so prevalent in Australian casinos that it's difficult to believe that it only first hit the floors in 1987.

Even Crown Casino, widely regarded as having the premier poker rooms in this country, only introduced the game in 1997.

Obviously we are yet to reach the heights of popularity that the sport has achieved in America, where every major tournament is televised and attracts thousands of live spectators, but the popularity and the competitors continue to grow.

For a professional player, I always hope we'll get to that point. The growth so far has been satisfying as the standard of the events available in Australia continue to improve, as we attract more international talent as well as retaining our best home-grown players.

I believe the popularity and exposure has come from the internet in the past eight years, as online poker is a great way to learn, polish your game, and even compete in some serious tournaments.

This has led to a culture of amateur and professional poker players coming home from work to practice a few hands, or squeezing in a turbo play game during their lunch break. It's made poker accessible, fun and fast for a wealth of people who may never have considered stepping into a casino.

Once players do make the move from online to live it's the tournament that is king. Australia's tournaments just keep getting better and better. We are finally boasting a schedule of tournaments throughout the year that can hold their head up among the internationals and give a professional a serious challenge. From the Aussie Millions and this weekend's Pokerstars.net APPT, (the largest poker tour in the region) to smaller events that still offer a genuine challenge like the ANZPT, a professional player could quite happily now play a full season in this country and boast an impressive record of events.

For the past two years an Australian has won the PokerStars.net APPT - in 2007 Sydneysider Grant Levy became the first Aussie to win a million dollars on home soil, then in 2008 another Sydney boy, Martin Rowe, repeated the feat.

I'm hoping that the improved tournaments will continue to nurture local talent, so I hope to be there at the final table taking place on stage in the Star City Sports Bar with full viewing capabilities, tomorrow. With more great local wins, more impressive local talent, more people throwing their support behind the scene and more challenging and exciting tournaments, who knows where we'll be in another 20 years.

Until next week, pass the sugar.

Poker News Media: Gaming site PKR picks Unica to improve e-mail program - 8th December 2009

PKR.com, a poker Web site, is working with interactive marketing company Unica on its international e-mail program.

The site is implementing Unica's software into its technology system, a process expected to be complete by early next year. PKR.com uses e-mail for retention purposes, specifically to encourage customers to return to the site and play more.

“Our members value our unique online community, and we want to make sure that we tap into their passion to ensure that they keep coming back,” said Simon Prodger, marketing director at PKR.COM, in a statement.

On average, PKR.com sends 10 million to 12 million e-mails to its 3 million customers every month. These messages go out in five different languages to 200 different countries, and the company sends a weekly e-mail to all of its customers.

The first phase of the Unica integration will automate this process into sending triggered messages based on a customer's behavior, geographic location and the message.

“The objective is to send the e-mail at the time that the customer is likely to engage,” said Graeme McLaren, director of strategic marketing for EMEA at Unica. “They are seeking to drive relevance, higher response rates and efficiency by automating something that is currently manual.”

The company will also tailor e-mail content by language and culture, depending on the customer. “Gamblers in Hong Kong are not interested in the same thing that gamblers in the UK are interested in,” said McLaren.

The automation also includes sending dynamic messages that can change depending on the time a customer opens them. For example, if an e-mail is promoting an offer that has expired by the time the recipient opens it, a new message will be inserted into the e-mail.

PKR.com joins other Unica gaming clients. Unica's roster already includes 888.com, Boyd Gaming, Casinos Austria, Foxwoods and Full Tilt Poker.

New Ivey makes PKR history - 13th November 2009

PKR.com player ‘PatIvey’ has gone down in PKR history after producing a performance which saw him claim back-to-back Masters titles.

A first in the tournament’s history, the 25 year old Swede claimed the coveted PKR Masters crown twice in consecutive months– scooping a huge $60,000 in the process. He then returned for a third month and despite making the final table with the chip lead, just missed out on the hat-trick - bringing home $11,250 for third place, and bowing out to Russian ‘ShatokhinNikita’.

On top of that impressive feat, ‘PatIvey’ continued his good run, with a Saturday Big Shot victory for $7,800 as well as a win in a $10,000 Guaranteed Prime Time tournament.

The up-and-coming online phenomenon from Norkopping commented on success and his recent hot-streak, saying "Of course you have to be lucky. But when I play I try not to risk all my chips on weak hands and I try to put the guys on what they have, and after that I make my play. If you have many chips it's not wrong to be a fish and try to steal. But when you play tournaments you must have a combination of good play and luck. Sometimes you have that luck and sometimes you don't, but you can always improve your own odds of winning - that's the big clue I think."

‘GAMAGO’ HITS RECORD PARTYCASINO GOLD MEGA JACKPOT AND MAKES ONLINE GAMING HISTORY
$45 SPINS UP TO $4,978,336.62 ON THE MEGA FORTUNE WHEEL!

Gibraltar – 8th December 2009 – The Gold Mega Jackpot at PartyCasino.com has finally been hit and one lucky player is a staggering $4,978,336.62 better off! The jackpot was by far the biggest in the industry and is a landmark for the world’s largest online casino!

The lucky player is ‘gamago,’ a member of the PartyGaming VIP Club, the Palladium Lounge, from Germany. He was delighted by his record breaking win.

“I was so shocked when I won the jackpot and the news still really hasn’t sunk in! I have to say I had my eye on the big jackpot but I really don’t play aiming for them, I play for fun. I have won $50,000 and $100,000 jackpots before but nothing on this scale. It is unbelievable that one spin has given me nearly $5 million!”

The fateful spin came at 20.42ET on December 2nd. The stake was $45 on popular PartyCasino.com Gold Mega Jackpot game, the Mega Fortune Wheel. The screen exploded with congratulations and colour as ‘gamago’ turned $45 into $4,978,336.62!

Clearly, nearly $5 million is a life changing amount of money but ‘gamago’ has no real view on what he is going to be doing with this record windfall. “To be honest, I don’t have any plans on what I am going to do with the money as yet.”

A PartyCasino.com spokesman said: “We would like to congratulate ‘gamago’ on taking down this monster record Gold Mega Jackpot and making online gaming history. We assumed the jackpot would reach $5 million and stated as such but this record Gold Mega Jackpot hit shortly after we published those fateful words! ‘gamago’ is a valued member of the Palladium Lounge and we wish him well with his newly found mega riches!”

PartyCasino.com now offers over 130 games, including 93 slots, and pays out easily over $10 million EVERY DAY to players. The world’s largest online casino continues to expand rapidly.

Recent popular additions include Resident Evil, The Naked Gun, High Noon and Bejeweled. Other new additions such as Tarzan and Multi-Hand BlackJack Pro were developed in house by PartyGaming’s specialist unit ‘The Games Studio.’ Gold Mega Jackpot games are: The Godfather, Mega Fortune Wheel, Super Joker, Super Mystic, Super Fortune Wheel and Super Star.

Christmas is coming to PartyCasino.com early. The ‘Festive Frenzy’ sees the world’s largest online casino give away cash gifts, bonuses and PartyPoints worth a huge $500,000 - all for free.

Christmas gifts of cash, bonuses and PartyPoints will appear in the Lobby from 10th to 24th December. If a customer spots one, make sure they click ’accept’ and PartyCasino.com will credit it to their account.

A PartyCasino.com spokesman said: “The gifts will get bigger and we’ll give more of them away the closer we get to Christmas Day, so keep your eyes peeled. Your chances of getting a gift get better the more you play. You can also win a share of $100,000 on our massive Festive Frenzy leader board. Every PartyPoint you collect during the promotional period will count towards your final ranking, so keep playing: the more points you earn, the bigger your prize could be.”

Here’s what can be won:

10th to 16th December: win a share of $175,000 as gifts ranging from 50 PartyPoints to cash bonuses of $250 appear in the Lobby

17th to 24th December: win a share of $280,000 as gifts ranging from 100 PartyPoints to $1,000 in cash appear in the Lobby

25th December: PartyCasino.com will award a share of $100,000 in gifts to the top 500 players on the Festive Frenzy leader board – including a staggering $10,000 for the winner - plus extra hot spot gifts for every 5th rank between 505 and 1,000

Melbourne casino 'not a convent' - 8th December 2009

Melbourne's Crown Casino says it operates within the law despite reports of criminal activity at the complex.

A police report from 2007, obtained under freedom of information laws, highlighted money laundering, prostitution and cheating are among the crimes committed at the casino over a three-year period.

Crown Casino spokesman, Gary O'Neil, says the casino is heavily regulated and has been found to operate within the law.

"There is more legislation, regulation, rules to be followed and adhered to, than any other business. And we do."

"We are put to the test, and the test is the VCGR have to determine whether we are a sufficiently well-regulated operation to deserve to continue to hold the licence, and they did that," he said.

He says the casino meets all the required standards for operation.

"I might say that I believe this casino is probably the best managed and the best regulated of any casino that I've experienced anywhere in the world," he said.

"But we are a casino. We are not the Star of the Sea convent. Things do go on. But we meet our obligations and our responsibilities in those areas."

He says the accusation of money laundering is two years old and the casino has done a lot of work to fix that problem.

PartyPoker Launches Full House Promotion, by Dan Cypra - 5th December 2009

Throughout the month of December, PartyPoker will be holding the Full House promotion. The three-pronged promotion covers the worlds of cash games, sit and gos, and multi-table tournaments. PartyPoker does not accept players from the United States.

The first component of PartyPoker’s Full House promotion is the $50,000 Cash Game Race. The site’s Bronze, Silver, and Gold players are eligible for the five-figure purse and the top prize is $3,000. The top 500 players on the points-based leaderboard will walk away with cash, with the minimum payout being $10. The top seven players will earn over $1,000, while the top 200 will take home at least $100. The $50,000 Cash Game Race runs between December 3rd and 23rd and only Party Points earned at ring games will count.

At the time of writing, the top player on the $50,000 Cash Game Race, “luckboxing47,” has luck boxed his way to 6,466 Party Points and, if the promotion ended today, would be in line for a $3,000 payday. The 500th player, “alfie1906,” has 348 points. PartyPoker’s Palladium Lounge members are not eligible to battle in the $50,000 Cash Game Race.

The Jackpot Hunter is geared towards sit and go aficionados on PartyPoker. This part of the promotion, which runs all month long, offers a colossal $160,000 in potential payouts. One $50,000 prize is available for any player who manages to take down not one, not two, not three, not four, but five $55 buy-in or higher sit and gos in a row. Three $20,000 prizes are available for players who can accomplish the feat in $12 to $54 buy-in sit and gos and five $10,000 jackpots are available for sit and gos ranging in buy-in from $3 to $11. All wins must be consecutive.

Jackpot Hunter prizes are awarded on a first come, first served basis. PartyPoker’s website explains the redemption process: “Once you’ve won five consecutive STTs at a particular level, e-mail your account name to info@partypoker.com immediately.” This part of the Full House promotion began on December 1st. Here’s the fine print: all five sit and gos won must be of the exact same buy-in and only 10-seat single-table tournaments are eligible. Double-or-Nothing events do not count and players can claim as many jackpots as they can achieve.

The final part of the Full House promotion on PartyPoker consists of $1 Million Multi-Table Tournament Jackpots. Running all month long, the Multi-Table Jackpots require players to buy into daily $5,000 prize pool tournaments with a price tag of 20 Party Points. The top 200 players in each $5,000 event move on to a $250,000 Grand Final on January 3rd. PartyPoker players who fail to qualify for the Grand Final can pony up 1,000 Party Points to enter. Any player who wins two of the $5,000 events will earn $100,000 and, if a player can snag titles in any three of these tournaments, they’ll earn a life-changing $1 million.

The wins in $5,000 events don’t have to be consecutive and PartyPoker customers must e-mail the site if they’re eligible to win the $100,000 or $1 million prizes. Jackpots are awarded on a first come, first served basis.

PartyPoker is the fourth largest online poker site or network worldwide with a seven-day running average of 4,700 real money ring game players according to PokerScout.com. During its peak hours, which occur in the evening throughout Europe, well north of 7,000 cash game players can be found on its felts. PartyPoker is the second largest site or network to accept U.S. players behind the mammoth iPoker Network, whose family of rooms includes Titan Poker, CelebPoker, Mansion Poker, Paddy Power Poker, and William Hill.

Three ways to win are available this month as part of the PartyPoker Full House promotion. Visit the site for more details. (Credit: Poker News Daily)
