Too many poker celebrities? by Greg Tingle - 29th August 2008

Is the celebrity poker market becoming overcrowded? For that matter, is the online casino and online poker market flooded with not only too many celebrities, but too many casino and poker brands?

Let's play word - brand - name association...

Richard Branson - Virgin

Calvin Ayre - Bodog (regardless of the fact he sold it to Morris Mohawk Gaming Group)

Shane Warne - 888

Chris Moneymaker - Poker Stars (and World Series of Poker)... ok, Moneymaker was a regular player, with a great name who "made it", but you get the point

Many online casino and poker websites and portals make no secret of the fact that prefer one of two brands. The exception is when they just back one brand like "The Wizrd of Odds" Michael Shackleford public and shameless pushing of Bodog.. tip, it's got more to do with no pop ups appearing on Bodog, especially considering the current legal going ons at Bodog, which are also of course related to Morris Mohawk to some extent.

Brian Balsbaugh, owner of poker talent agency Poker Royalty explains. "Many poker sites have been successful using top professionals by having them provide content for the site. This gives customers a reason to revisit the site to get updates and instructional information from the top names in poker. That’s done through trip reports and ‘Hand of the Week’ kind of articles, as well as offering the ability to interact with the players themselves."

There's a ton of brands out there in the online casino and online poker world, and just as many affiliate programs.

Pacific Poker to send players to Poker Open V, by Sarah Polson - 29th August 2008

888 will be bringing together pros, stars and poker players from around the world for the Poker Open V at the end of October.

The tournament is limited to 108 seats which will be filled by eight celebrities, 65 professional poker players and 35 online qualifiers at 888's Pacific Poker online poker site. Those players will have a shot at a piece of a $648,000 prize pool, with $250,000 of that going to the winner.

Formerly known as the U.K. Open, the 888 Poker Open will take place Oct. 27-Nov.7 at the Maidstone television studios. The event will be filmed to be broadcast on SkySports between January and June 2009.

"The 888.com Poker Open Championship is certainly a highlight in the poker calendar. Now in its fifth year, the competition is attracting some of the best players in the world which makes for an even more competitive tournament than last year," said Matt Robinson, 888 marketing director.

"The TV cameras will no doubt capture all the excitement and unexpected turns from start to finish."

Shane Warne and Ronnie O'Sullivan will be two of the celebrities taking to the felt in the event. Some of the poker pros confirmed to play are Andy Black, Roland De Wolf, Richard Ashby, Neil Channing and Jeff Fenech.

Online poker players hoping to join them need to head to Pacific Poker to win a seat. The poker site will be hosting country-specific tournaments each week to battle for spots in a weekly international final.

The national tournaments will take place each Thursday during the seven Thursdays leading up to the 888 Poker Open V. The top five players from each national tournament will move on to a weekly final on the Sunday of that week to compete for an $8,500 prize package to the Poker Open.

The country-specific satellites are as follows:

With only the top five players moving on to the weekly final, that means there will be a one in 60 shot at winning the Poker Open V prize package.

The Saturday finals will take place at 10 a.m. and have the following prizes:

Eastside Cannery: Opening Night Lures Crowd, By Arnold M. Knightly - Review -Journal - 29th August 2008

Thousands flock to newest competitor on Boulder Strip

There was little sign of the economic slowdown in gaming Thursday night at the opening of the $250 million Eastside Cannery.

Hundreds waited in the stifling heat, some as long as 21/2 hours, for the valley's latest hotel-casino to open to the public at 8 p.m.

Donna Applegate, who arrived at 5:30 p.m., said it was time for a new casino in the area.

She added that as the economy has gotten worse, she believed that locals casinos have been tightening their slots.

"I am hoping the machines are loose," Applegate said. "I want to win, and if I do, I'll be back."

Nearly 30 minutes after the doors opened, a few thousand people had arrived, causing traffic problems in the parking lot and along Boulder Highway.

But not all customers were greeted with open arms.

Families with children and the curious under age 21 were turned away by security unless they were eating in one of the restaurants.

William Wortman, co-owner of Cannery Casino Resorts, said the company built as nice a locals casino as there is in the market for a competitive price.

"We think it brings a new dimension to the east side of town," Wortman said. "We're extremely proud of what we've done here."

Personally, Wortman said, he was most proud that 250 employees from the demolished Nevada Palace made the transition to the new property.

The Eastside Cannery opened its doors on a holiday weekend but in a locals market that has been shaken by high gasoline prices, a mortgage crisis and an uncertain job market.

A question that a lot of the neighboring property owners will be asking today is: How many of the Cannery's customers were ours, and will they come back to us after Thursday night?

A two-hour V.I.P. party before the public opening was attended by many executives from competing gaming companies Boyd Gaming Corp. and Station Casinos, including Stations Chairman and CEO Frank Fertitta III.

Also attending the party were executives and billionaire James Packer from Crown Ltd., the Melbourne, Australia-based gaming company buying Cannery Casino Resorts for $1.8 billion.

Station Casinos spokeswoman Lori Nelson said at the V.I.P. event, "We view the Cannery as competition, and we take competition very seriously."

Station Casinos recently spent $50 million at the nearby Boulder Station renovating various areas, including the buffet, sports book and bingo room. The company will begin a room renovation this fall.

Brian McGill, an analyst for Wachovia Capital Markets who toured the property earlier, said in an investor's note Thursday that he suspects the new property will "take significant share" of customers from Boyd Gaming's Sam's Town, which is next door.

He said he was impressed by "the high quality" of the Eastside Cannery.

"For Boyd (Gaming Corp.), it will be a question of whether the customer base is loyal enough not to give up on the property," McGill wrote. "It remains to be seen whether Boyd will begin to aggressively promote Sam's Town to try to keep its customers."

McGill said the new property should negatively affect Boyd's cash flow, which already is down 8.7 percent at its six locals casinos this year.

Sam's Town accounts for about 23 percent of the company's locals cash flow.

Boyd spokesman Rob Stillwell declined to comment on the Eastside Cannery's opening and its expected impact on his company's properties.

In addition to Sam's Town, the new property joins Arizona Charlie's Boulder and a series of smaller operators along a three-mile stretch of Boulder Highway south of U.S. Highway 95 that was envisioned, at one point, as being a locals Strip.

The Eastside Cannery has 2,187 slot machines and 26 table games on the casino floor.

This is a significant increase from the nearly 485 slots and nine table games that the Nevada Palace, which the Eastside Cannery is replacing, had.

The Eastside Cannery features a 16-story hotel tower with 307 rooms, a 20,000-square-foot ballroom with meeting spaces. The hotel-casino also will have a 450-seat bingo hall, six restaurants, and a pool, spa and sports book.

The new property sits on 27 acres with room for expansion.

The Eastside Cannery is the first major hotel-casino to open on the Boulder Strip, the third largest gaming sector by revenue in Nevada, since Station Casinos opened Boulder Station 14 years ago.

Gaming revenues along the Boulder Strip, which includes Sunset Station in Henderson, decreased 2.44 percent to $903.2 million between July 2007 and June 30.

More recently, revenues dropped 8.24 percent to $214.8 million for the three months ended June 30.

Cannery Casino Resorts was founded by Wortman and casino veteran Bill Paulos. Cannery Casino Resorts also owns the Cannery in North Las Vegas, which opened in 2003, and operates the Rampart Casino at the JW Marriott at Summerlin.

Asian largest poker tournament to begin today - 29th August 2008

The Asian Poker Tour Macau will begin today with the first card of the main event
following yesterday's welcome reception and satellite tournaments. The event will run from August 27 to 31 and is being held at the StarWorld casino.

The latest development sees a surprise visit by the legendary Jack Binion, host of the first World Series of Poker at the Horseshoe in 1970. Binion and "Godfather of Poker" Doyle Brunson will join tournament director Matt Savage to call "Shuffle Up and Deal" to open the prestigious event.

Yesterday Brunson took part in a book signing, and, after lines and lines of people
queued round the block to meet the legend, he was in no doubt about the significance of his visit. Brunson said, "I have been to so many tournaments and so many places in the world but I have to say I am so impressed with The Asian Poker Tour and Macau. This is the first time I have been here." "I thought Las Vegas was the gambling capital of the world but I was wrong, it feels like coming home."

Member of the "November Nine" on the final table of last year's world series,
Michael "Chino" Rheem, is playing the APT Macau and joins a formidable line-up of
champions and legends.

Chinese-born 10 time world champion bracelet winner and Rounders' film legend Johnny Chan will be in a field that also includes Todd Brunson, Liz Lieu, J.C Tran, Kenny Tran, John Juanda, Nam Le, Quinn Do, Steve Sung, Huck Seed, Mel Judah, Mansour Matloubi and APT Philippines champion David Saab.

All have their eyes on glory and history at Asia's richest tournament. The buy-in for the main event is USD 5300. The event organizers had also extended an open invitation to Olympic megastar and poker nut Michael Phelps. Experts believe that the Vietnamese contingent will be strong and are the ones to watch out for with JC Tran, Kenny Tran, Le, Do and Lieu leading the charge.

The APT Macau is making history by offering USD 1.5 million; the largest guaranteed
prize pool ever to be offered in Asia, with the first prize also guaranteed at USD
500,000. Many of the big names are also expected to take part in an exciting USD 128,079 high stakes cash game on Friday at the StarWorld.

Chris Parker, CEO of the Asian Poker Tour said, "We're delighted that so many world
class names want to be part of the Asian Poker Tour. To have Vegas legends Jack Binion and Doyle Brunson in Macau to kick-off off the tournament is truly significant. Both are pioneers and were around at the start in Vegas and it really says something that they want to mark what we think will herald the start of a poker explosion in Macau."

"With the presence of online qualifiers from around the world too, the Asian Poker Tour has a very bright future. We're proud to make history by holding Asia's biggest guaranteed tournament."

Joining the stars are players from all over the world who have won seats to the event by qualifying through online satellites at PartyPoker.com, DafaPoker, PKR, Titan Poker, Bodog, JBet Poker, Virgin Poker, and Poker Trillion David Saab of Australia won the top prize of USD 280,000 at the first leg of the Asian Poker Tour in Manila on June 1.

He recently finished 46th in the World Series main event, winning USD 135,100, and hopes to add a second APT championship to his poker accomplishments. The APT has also created a special leader board that rewards players who take part in every leg of the tour.

AGE gaming event generates strong sales leads - Press Release - 29th August 2008

Initial feedback following this week’s Australasian Gaming Expo has been extremely positive, with exhibitors encouraged by the attendance of quality buyers during the show at Sydney’s Darling Harbour.

“All in all, we welcomed just under 10,000 visitors at the three day exhibition and conference,” said Mr Ross Ferrar, Chief Executive of the organisers, Gaming Technologies Association.

“While the numbers were slightly down on last year’s event, we are not surprised, given the current global and local economic downturn.

“We are pleased that exhibitors received strong sales leads from this year’s event. And, visitors to the trade show also enjoyed the conference and networking opportunities to catch up with their industry peers and colleagues”.

Trade show suppliers at the show are generally upbeat about the future of the gaming and hospitality market, and confident that the Asia Pacific region is at the forefront of technology.

Next year’s AGE is the 20th Anniversary of Australasia’s premier trade show for the gaming industry, scheduled for 16-18 August 2009.

Gaming Technologies Association, who organise and host the event, promise a spectacular gaming show next year.

“The gaming industry is global, with the Asia Pacific region leading the charge for future growth while providing the experience and knowledge gained from decades of successful operations,” said Mr Ferrar from GTA.

This year’s Australasian Gaming Expo showcased more than 200 exhibitors over three halls at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the unique AGE Gaming Conference. Entry to both the exhibition and the conference was complimentary to industry delegates, courtesy of the GTA.

The 2009 Australasian Gaming Expo and 20th annual event will be held 16-18 August 2009.

GTA hosts and operates the annual Australasian Gaming Expo (AGE) and the New Zealand Gaming Expo. Further information about the AGE is available at www.austgamingexpo.com

Gaming Technologies Association (GTA) is a not-for-profit industry association, established in 1990 as the Australasian Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association for the purpose of promoting the development of the manufacturing resources of Australia. GTA members provide technology and equipment to hospitality venues in over 250 jurisdictions around the world. GTA's members are Ainsworth Game Technology, Aristocrat Technologies, Aruze Gaming Australia, Global Gaming Industries, IGT (Australia), Konami Australia, and Stargames Corporation.

Aristocrat pins recovery hopes on new games - The Sydney Morning Herald - 29th August 2008

Aristocrat Leisure is pinning its hopes on new games to improve market share and sales over the year but warned it did not expect market conditions to improve in the short term.

The manufacturer, distributor and servicer of gaming machines yesterday posted a 43.4 per cent fall in first half 2008 profit as challenging economic conditions and the high Australian dollar impacted on its earnings.

The company reported a net profit of $71.38 million for the six months to June 30, down from $125.87 million in the corresponding half last year.

The result was just above its guidance for a profit of $70 million.

The company yesterday also settled the largest class action in Australia in the Federal Court.

Aristocrat will pay out more than $144 million to thousands of shareholders after the court found it had misstated earnings on two occasions and issued a subsequent profit forecast that was unattainable.

This resulted in a share price plunge and losses for its shareholders when the true state of the company was revealed.

Outgoing chief executive Paul Oneile declined to comment on the outcome, concentrating instead on the interim result. Mr Oneile, who plans to leave Aristocrat at the end of the year, said the company was gaining traction with sales of a new machine and games on its Gen7 platform.

"We only got the approvals (for the games) in NSW in April, so for the first quarter we weren't selling much into the NSW market at all," Mr Oneile said. "Since those approvals have come through, our sales have picked up significantly so we're actually going into the second half obtaining a much greater market share of the overall new sales than we had in the first half."

Aristocrat blamed its disappointing first-half performance on unfavourable economic and regulatory conditions in the group's two largest regions, Australia and North America.

Total revenue for the half year was $466.3 million, down from $558.1 million in the first half of 2007.

Aristocrat posted earnings falls in Australia, New Zealand and North America, but improved profits in Japan.

Mr Oneile said the first half of 2008 had been particularly challenging, with replacement demand in the group's key markets running at historic lows.

"At the same time, we have suffered from operator reluctance to purchase product ahead of the availability of our new Viridian cabinet and Gen7 platform and a larger library of content."

In Australia, revenue fell 23.2 per cent while profits dropped 37.2 per cent.

Legal gamble pays off for shareholder - The Sydney Morning Herald - 29th August 2008

Australia's largest shareholder class action has been formally settled for $144.5 million in the Federal Court after plaintiff law firm Maurice Blackburn and its target, Aristocrat Leisure, jointly asked Justice Margaret Stone to approve a deal they struck in May.

The settlement outstrips the $112 million agreement struck by GIO shareholders in 2003.

Aristocrat shares gained 13 cents, or 2.3 per cent, to close at $5.72.

Unlike GIO, which settled before hearings began, the Aristocrat case was settled after a full trial in October.

Another difference is that the Aristocrat case was supported by a litigation funder, IMF (Australia), which paid the legal fees and took the risk of an adverse costs order.

In return, IMF expects to receive about $37 million from the settlement proceeds.

The settlement involves Aristocrat paying $109 million to clients of Maurice Blackburn who signed a funding agreement with IMF and $27 million to other shareholders.

The company will also pay $8.5 million in legal costs and incur expenses of up to $40 million.

What Is Online Publishing?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re familiar with at least some basic forms of online publishing. But what is online publishing, exactly?

In the most general sense, online publishing simply refers to any kind of content that’s published and distributed on the internet. This could include anything from blog posts and articles to video content creation and infographics.

But while the definition of online publishing is fairly straightforward, there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye (like: what digital publishing platforms to use). In this complete guide, we’ll take a closer look at everything you need to know about online publishing.

By the end of this article, you should have a firm understanding of what online publishing is and how it can be used to reach your target audience. So let’s get started!

Benefits Of Online Publishing

There are many benefits of online publishing, including:

Reach a global audience: Digital publications will find that they can reach readers all over the world with just a few clicks.

Cost-effective: There are no printing or distribution costs associated with online publishing, so it can be a very cost-effective way to get your work out there.

Immediate feedback: Readers can leave comments and feedback on your work almost immediately, which can be extremely valuable for getting constructive criticism and improving future work.

Increased visibility: E-publishing can help increase the visibility of your work, which can lead to more readers and followers. Folks can find you easily with a wifi connection, even using their smartphone, laptops, or e-reader to access your published content.

Greater control: With online publishing, you have complete control over how your work is presented and distributed, so you can make sure it reaches the right audience.

Monetization: There are plenty of ways to monetize your content, like serving ads on your page to readers, subscriptions-based business models, affiliate marketing links, or sponsored content.

Types Of Content For Online Publishing

There are many different types of content that can be published online, from blog posts and articles to eBooks and audio files. The best way to determine what type of content will work best for your online publication is to consider your audience and what they are looking for. Here are some popular types of content for online publishing:

Blog Posts: Blog posts are a great way to share your thoughts and ideas with the world. They can be about any topic you like, and you can easily incorporate images, videos, and links into your post to make it more engaging.

Articles: Articles are similar to blog posts, but they tend to be more informative in nature. If you have expertise on a particular subject, writing articles can be a great way to share your knowledge with others.

Digital Magazines: Digital or online magazines generally follow the format you would expect from a traditional, in-print magazine…only, they are entirely online. An example would be The Ecclesiestical Review, an arts and culture magazine.

eBooks: eBooks are a great way to share longer pieces of writing with your audience. They can be downloaded and read on various devices, increasing functionality and convenience for busy people who want to learn more about a certain topic.

Audio Files: Audio files are another popular type of content for online publishing. You can create podcasts or simply record yourself talking about a particular subject. This is a great option for people who prefer to listen to information instead of reading it.

Interactive Content: This may include something simple like the ability to “zoom in/out” on a product photo but it can also go more in-depth with multimedia elements. Think: reader instigated animations, parallax scrolling, or embedded tutorials/wizards.

Examples Of Online Publishing

There are a number of different ways that you can publish online, and the method that you choose will depend on your specific goals and needs. Here are some common examples of online publishing:

Blogs: A blog is a personal website or web diary where you can share your thoughts and ideas with the world. You can set up a blog for free using platforms like WordPress or Blogger.

Podcasts: A podcast is audio content usually published on third-party platforms like Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Podcasts are great because they can be collaborative; you can invite guests and experts to join you in discussions.

Social media: Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are great ways to share your content with a large audience. You can use social media to promote your blog posts, articles, or other forms of content.

E-commerce: If you sell products or services online, then you’re already engaged in e-commerce publishing for retailers. This type of publishing involves creating product pages, catalogs, descriptions, and other forms of content that help promote and sell your products or services.

Press releases: Press releases are short announcements that are often used to promote events or product launches. They can be published on your website or distributed to news outlets and other websites in an effort to generate publicity for your business.

Apps: You may decide to design and promote your own mobile app, whatever that might look like for your unique product/service. The app then becomes your published content and you would manage and promote it accordingly.

Macau, China – 25th August 2008 --- Ahead of the $1.5 million GUARANTEED APT Macau, that runs from the 27th – 31st August, the glamorous Galaxy StarWorld Casino Resort and Hotel will be bustling with the arrival of the world’s greatest poker players. However, Tuesday 26th August is also a hectic day as the APT officially hits town!

At 3.30pm on Tuesday 26th August, the APT Poker Room on Level 2 will be opened. This is followed at 4.30pm by book signings in the lobby by US poker legend Doyle Brunson, the ‘Godfather of Poker,’ who has won 10 WSOP® bracelets and is the most revered poker strategy writer in the world. The latest development sees a surprise visit by the legendary Jack Binion, host of the first World Series of Poker® at the Horseshoe in 1970. Binion and ‘Godfather of Poker’ Doyle Brunson are going to join tournament director Matt Savage to call ‘Shuffle Up and Deal” to open the prestigious event.

This afternoon Doyle Brunson took part in a book signing, and, after lines and lines of people queued around the block to meet the legend, he was in no doubt about the significance of his visit.

Brunson said: “I have been to so many tournaments and so many places in the world but I have to say I am so impressed with The Asian Poker Tour and Macau. This is the first time I have been here.”

“I thought Las Vegas was the gambling capital of the world but I was wrong, it feels like coming home.”

Member of the “November Nine” on the final table of the 2008 WSOP®, Michael ‘Chino’ Rheem, is playing the APT Macau and he joins a formidable line-up of champions and legends taking part. Chinese-born 10 time WSOP® bracelet winner and ‘Rounders’ film legend Johnny Chan will be in a field that also includes Todd Brunson, Liz Lieu, J.C Tran, Kenny Tran, John Juanda, Nam Le, Quinn Do, Steve Sung, Huck Seed, Mel Judah, Mansour Matloubi and APT Philippines champion David Saab. All have their eyes on glory and history at Asia’s richest tournament. The buy-in for the main event is USD $5300 ($5000+$300). The event organizers have also extended an open invitation to Olympic megastar and poker nut Michael Phelps. Experts believe that the Vietnamese contingent will be strong and are the ones to watch out for with JC Tran, Kenny Tran, Le, Do and Lieu leading the charge.

The APT Macau is making history by offering US$1.5 million, the largest guaranteed prize pool ever to be offered in Asia, with the first prize also guaranteed at $500,000. Many of the big names are also expected to take part in an exciting HK$1,000,000 high stakes cash game on Friday at the StarWorld, more details of which will be announced in the near future.

Chris Parker, CEO of the Asian Poker Tour said: “ We’re delighted that so many world class names want to be part of the Asian Poker Tour. To have Vegas legends Jack Binion and Doyle Brunson in Macau to kick-off off the tournament is truly significant. Both are pioneers and were around at the start in Vegas and it really says something that they want to mark what we think will herald the start of a poker explosion in Macau. With the presence of online qualifiers from around the world too, the Asian Poker Tour has a very bright future. We’re proud to make history by holding Asia’s biggest guaranteed tournament.”

Joining the stars are players from all over the world who have won seats to the event by qualifying through online satellites at PartyPoker.com, DafaPoker (http://www.dafapoker.com), PKR, Titan Poker (www.titanpoker.com), Bodog (http://www.bodoglife.co.uk), JBet Poker (http://www.jbet.com), Virgin Poker (http://www.virgingames.com/poker), and Poker Trillion (http://www.pokertrillion.com).

David Saab of Australia won the top prize of US$280,000 at the first leg of the Asian Poker Tour in Manila on June 1st. He recently finished 46th in the WSOP® Main Event, winning US$135,100, and hopes to add a second APT championship to his poker accomplishments. The APT has also created a special leaderboard that rewards players who take part in every leg of the tour.

Online casinos and poker rooms hack into clubs

The worst kept secret in the industry is way out in the open... Internet casinos and online poker rooms have had a considerable negative effect on the bricks and mortar casino and club industry.

Granted, one armed bandits are not deal in traditional casinos and clubs, however findings released from government, clubs and online measurement companies, to name a few, all clearly demonstrate the internet influence on the gambling sector.

Bricks and mortar casinos and clubs who fail to integrate a sound internet strategy into their business, marketing and media plans are going to find the going particularly tough.

In recent months Australian gaming tycoon, James Packer, head of PBL Media, has even pulled out of casino deals. Could it be long until Packer starts making much more noise about the online casino sector? Perhaps a NineMSN savour in the wind.

Popular tourism destinations such as Bondi Beach, Cairns and the entertainment district of Western Australia are likely to not be adversely effected as some older and less densely populated venues.

Clearly, the push is on to attract both new players, and younger players. To achieve this establishments will need machines that can compete with the best that the online casino and poker sector offers, and that is not going to be easy.

There's room for both traditional casinos and internet casinos, however the stakes remain as high as ever.

Profit slashed at Aristocrat, outlook gloomy - The Australian - 28th August 2008

Slot machine maker Aristocrat Leisure rang in a fall of 43 per cent in first-half profit and said market conditions would not improve this year.

The $71.38 million in net profit announced today by Aristocrat was broadly in line with market expectations and the company's own forecast, which had been recently downgraded.

Credit Suisse had forecast $72.8 million, while Goldman Sachs JBWere tipped $70.1 million; Aristocrat (ASX: ALL) recently cut its expectations for net profit to about $70 million.

Aristocrat last month issued a profit warning, blaming the US economic decline, delays in new casino openings and the high Australian dollar for poor sales of its machines.

The manufacturer and distributor of gaming machines had also pointed to regulatory issues in its biggest markets, Australia and North America.

Chief executive Paul Oneile had said he would step down at the end of this year.

While Aristocrat said “market conditions in general are not expected to improve over the balance of the year”, it also said it was likely to benefit from introduction of its new Viridia Gen7 game and the launch of a key Japanese model later this year.

At the same time, Aristocrat said it would gain from continuation of improved pricing and tight cost control.

Revenue for the six months to June 30 fell 16 per cent to $473.9 million.

Aristocrat declared an interim dividend of 14 cents a share, unchanged from last year.

Gaming Expo features new technologies - Press Release - 25th August 2008

Business is steady and the outlook is optimistic for Australia and New Zealand’s gaming and hospitality industry, according to many exhibitors at this year’s Australasian Gaming Expo.

“Certainly, we’re receiving feedback from exhibitors that their products are generating strong interest and sales orders during the show,” said Ross Ferrar, Chief Executive of the Gaming Technologies Association (GTA), who organise the annual trade show and conference at Sydney’s Darling Harbour.

“The timing of the show has been great for a number of suppliers who maximised the trade event as an opportunity to launch their products to gaming venues before the busy Christmas period.”

Over 200 exhibitors have been showcasing the latest gaming technology and hospitality products and services, including GTA’s members, who have been displaying poker machines, gaming systems and services over the three day industry only trade event.

Following is a snapshot of GTA members’ hottest products featured at the show:

Ainsworth Game Technology

Ainsworth’s new stand alone “Double Shots” with progressive jackpots made an impact on the show floor. Recently approved in New South Wales and Queensland, the product generated much interest from clubs, casinos and hotels – and will be released internationally over the next few months.

Aristocrat Technologies

Aristocrat’s new environmentally friendly green machine; the Viridian cabinet appeared for the first time at a major trade show. Approved in NSW, ACT and all GLI jurisdictions including Nevada and Europe, the product attracted strong interest in terms of its functionality, appearance, ease of serviceability and innovative Gen7 technology.

Aruze Gaming

Aruze’s electronic tournament consoles feature gaming machines for the increasingly popular tournament play. The latest game “Lucky Frankie” was displayed in a 10 machine configuration, for play every three minutes. The game is currently operating at Star City casino and a number of Queensland casinos.

Global Gaming Industries

Global eye analytical software offers real time, online reporting which enables operators to dial in remotely. This head office management software is in strong demand with New South Wales hotel groups.

IGT (Australia)

IGT released their new one dollar link, called Fort Knox, which according to IGT, is the first symbol driven dollar link that’s been approved in New South Wales. IGT especially piqued the interest of visitors from New Zealand, Singapore and Macau.

Konami Australia

Konami’s Advantage 5-reel stepper machine was recently approved in New South Wales and Queensland – a stand alone progressive available in 1c, 5c and 10c denominations. Konami featured the machines with two new games – Sensational 7’s and Queen of Thebes.

Stargames Corporation

Building on the strength of Pink Panther, Stargames featured its latest symbol driven progressive bank of machines, “Grand Central”, due for release in early 2009. In addition, the company’s newly launched table games generated strong interest from casinos throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Aristocrat grapples with tough conditions - 28th August 2008

Aristocrat Leisure, an Australian gaming machine maker, reported a 44% fall in first-half profit as it grappled with tough economic conditions in key markets.

Aristocrat, the world's No. 2 slot machine maker, said net profit for the six months to June was $70.4 million, down from $125.9 million a year ago. Profit was down 36% in constant currency terms.

The company declared an interim dividend of 14 cents per share.

In late July, Aristocrat forecast a net profit of $70 million and said the first-half earnings were significantly impacted by deteriorating economic conditions in North America and Australia and a rising Australian dollar.

Aristocrat shares have halved in value this year, more than double the decline in the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index in the same period.

Spinners and losers, the community pays a price, by Andrew Tate - Fairfax - 24th August 2008

The spinning gold sovereign used with such effect by author Frank Hardy to foretell a corruption of the spirit in the opening lines of his novel Power Without Glory is now rampant in our communities in the form of the spinning wheels of poker machines.

But where Hardy's book, widely seen as a fictionalised account of the life of legendary Collingwood football club benefactor John Wren, told how a man called John West became rich on the back of the working poor, now it's the clubs that are directly benefiting from gambling's most efficient form of community larceny.

Earlier this year, The Age reported that Victorian AFL clubs gouged more than $110 million from poker machines in the 2006-07 financial year and are increasingly targeting Melbourne's most vulnerable communities. The Monash University research also revealed rorting by clubs of their "community benefit" obligations.

The clubs disputed the accuracy of those figures and one club, Collingwood, has since moved to sell two of its loss-making venues. The Magpies, however, will not be offloading their three money-spinners in outer-suburban areas.

Also grabbing a slice of the action is Hawthorn, with former premier-turned-president Jeff Kennett last month trumpeting plans for 80 poker machines at Caroline Springs — an odd look for the chairman of beyondblue, which combats depression-related illnesses.

Some contend these pokies venues provide "entertainment" where other services are lacking. Even a businessman from 100 years ago, such as John Wren, would recognise these places. In 2006, the racing industry made its peace with Wren when the Champions of Australian Racing Museum staged an exhibition about his "contribution to society". Having built his fortune from the illicit tote he ran in a Collingwood yard from 1893 to 1907, the invitations praised Wren as a "visionary businessman".

But where a single illegal entrepreneur once defied the authorities to bring "sport" to the people, the State Government and AFL clubs appear to have found a way to take the sport, and the fairness, out of the equation.

While the government takes pride in its gaming industry reforms and has done some hard yards to open the state's gaming machines to smaller operators, the overall reach and take of poker machines will remain staggeringly high. The government also points to the banning of 24-hour venues outside the casino and in 2012 — yes, in four years — the ban on automatic teller machines in venues. But I still recall Labor Premier Joan Kirner's feigned excitement in 1990 at the media launch of the first gaming machine at the first Tabaret. The beaten Premier played a clunky football game where an electronic player had to kick a goal. The industry immediately hit the boundary, it had won the game and traditional poker machines soon joined the party.

Elsewhere, Premier Kennett's casino remains a behemoth. Its "visionary businessman" and purveyor of sport is James Packer, who has also done well from house-friendly changes to blackjack and roulette rules. Before its recent corporate shake-up, the Packer empire had the benefit of cross-promoting football stars, posing as clowns on Channel Nine's The Footy Show, taking every opportunity to mention the delights to be had at Crown. Collingwood's president Eddie McGuire played a lead role as host and enthusiastic company man.

Then consider that the clubs don't just collect their cash via the machines they operate. The government has also handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in sponsorship for clubs such as Essendon to promote an anti-gambling message. Not a bad double-headed coin when you consider the Windy Hill social club is chock-full of poker machines.

The government and clubs maintain that revenue is put to good use, but that sounds a bit like the philanthropy attributed to the likes of Wren. Having cash on tap from the weakness of others usually allows you to throw some largesse towards your own pet causes.

It may ultimately be up to the public to make judgements about football clubs that talk about being part of a community, but who rely on gaming losses to feather the nest. AFL players earn their money onfield and provide joy to fans, but their pay packets and support networks should not be subsidised by pokies strategically placed to target those who covet the lifestyle that players enjoy.

Footy clinics, charity photo-ops and hospital visits are laudable, but the clubs and society should make stable homes for kids a priority ahead of the "community benefit" offered by football departments or big-screen TVs in gaming lounges.

In NSW, South Sydney co-owner Russell Crowe tried to take another path, moving to scrap the NRL club's 60 poker machines that were returning almost $1 million a year. Last week, members worried about revenue knocked back the plan.

Arguing his case, Crowe had said: "This group is for anyone who believes the best way to act is to think about how your actions can improve the lives of people in your community."

Contrast this to the AFL clubs' self-belief that the harm is offset by their own good deeds. Magpie president McGuire is one such charitable man, who views Wren as a great sporting entrepreneur and inspiration. He may be right. But after Collingwood took everything of value and left Victoria Park, the Pies' great spruiker lauded the club's move to the banks of the Yarra — where in the 1930s, Wren developed the Motordome.

Of course, the poker machines didn't go over the Yarra into the leafy neighbourhoods but to the outer suburbs, where cash is funnelled back to build a new empire.

And still the sovereign spins.

McGuire said in 2005: "It's amazing to think that John Wren built what we're now trying to build at the Lexus Centre. We're getting back to his original plan."

Power Without Glory indeed.
