Cool Hand Poker Offers $10,000 My Poker Challenge Promotion in October, by Brett Collson - Poker News Daily - 1st October 2009

Cool Hand Poker, an online poker site that appeals to the laid-back poker player, is offering a unique promotion for its members in October. The site’s method is to provide novice players with a fun and relaxing poker playing experience, but also give frequent customers cash prizes this month.

Cool Hand Poker’s main promotion in October is the My Poker Challenge, in which players will earn Cool Points based on their volume of play. Points will be awarded for each raked hand on various tables, which can then be used for tournament buy-ins. A maximum of 1,000 points can be earned each day, but if players end up with a positive balance on their cash game play, they will receive an additional 10% in points. The bonus points will be awarded to all players who earn a profit during the day.

Players who earn the maximum number of points every day, along with the additional 10% for ending up with a positive balance, will win $10,000. Everyone who takes part in the promotion will earn some type of cash prize. A $10,000 prize will be in the offing for players generating 37,400 points. A $1,250 cash prize will be awarded to players with 32,000 points. A $1,100 prize will be given to players with 31,000 points. Other prizes include $1,000 (29,000 points), $900 (26,800 points), $800 (24,800 points), $700 (22,700 points), $600 (20,600 points), and $500 (18,600 points).

On Mondays during the month of October, Cool Hand Poker will reward players with double points for playing on any of the site’s cash game tables. All points will go toward the My Poker Challenge promotion. Points are earned at the following rates:

Fixed Limit:
One point for each raked hand at $0.02/$0.04, $0.05/$0.10, $0.10/$0.20, and $0.25/$0.50 tables
Two points for each raked hand at $0.50/$1, $1/$2, $2/$4, and $5/$10 tables
One point for each raked hand at $10/$20

No Limit and Pot Limit:
One point for each raked hand at $0.02/$0.04, $0.05/$0.10, and $0.10/$0.20 tables
Two points for each raked hand at $0.25/$0.50, $0.50/$1, and $1/$2 tables
One point for each raked hand at $2/$4

Cool Hand Poker is also adding Survivor tournaments to its daily schedule in October. These tournaments are rare in that players are eliminated if they have the lowest chip count at the end of each level. This new and entertaining poker format can be found at various times during the day. At 9:45 BST, check out a $50 freeroll on the virtual felts of Cool Hand Poker. If you’re not busy, be sure to take advantage of a €5 + €0.50 buy-in Survivor tournament at 16:30 BST. At 18:30 BST, try your hand at the Survivor format by playing in a $10 prize pool practice freeroll. Finally, a €10 + €1 buy-in tournament is held daily at 20:30 BST.

Cool Hand Poker makes its home on the Microgaming Network, the ninth largest worldwide boasting a seven-day running average of 1,840 real money ring game players according to the traffic ranking site PokerScout.com. During its peak hours, which occur in the evening throughout Europe, nearly 3,700 players can be found perusing the Microgaming Network’s cash game felts. The Network and Cool Hand Poker do not accept players from the United States. (Credit: Poker News Daily)

Robert E. "Bob" Stupak, Vegas icon passes away

Robert E. "Bob" Stupak (April 6, 1942 – September 25, 2009) was a Las Vegas casino owner and entrepreneur.

Biography

Bob Stupak was the son of Chester and Florence Stupak. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Once the younger Stupak reached legal age, he moved to Las Vegas and started a coupon book venture. He sold books full of two-for-ones and other items. Stupak later moved to Australia to pursue a similar business venture, only to be asked to leave the country for questionable business practices.

While in Australia, Stupak was briefly married to Annette Suna, and they had a daughter, Nicole. From 1971 to 1985, Stupak was married to Sandra Joyce Wilkinson, and had two more children, Nevada and Summer.

Stupak moved to Las Vegas in 1971, eventually raising enough money to acquire a small, 1.5 acres (0.61 ha) parcel north of Sahara Avenue at Las Vegas Boulevard South. On March 31, 1974, Bob Stupak's World Famous Historic Gambling Museum opened for business. "The name was about 10 ft (3.0 m) longer than the casino," Stupak recalled years later. On May 21, an air conditioner caught fire and the building burned down.

In 1979 Stupak opened Vegas World, a casino known for its promotions and new twists on games. At its peak in the mid 1980's, Vegas World grossed $100 million per year.
In 1989, Stupak won a widely publicized million dollar wager on Super Bowl XXIII. Later that year, he won the Deuce to Seven Lowball championship bracelet at the World Series of Poker.

In 1995 Stupak suffered a motorcycle accident, breaking every bone in his face and going into a coma. Although the initial prognosis was that he would not survive, Stupak made a full recovery.

At the time of his motorcycle crash, Stupak was at work developing The Stratosphere, a massive observation tower that would be the largest sign in Las Vegas. The tower opened in late April 1996 at a cost of $550 million but was a financial disaster.

Many came to see the tower, but few stopped long enough to gamble, dine or shop. The Stratosphere went bankrupt soon thereafter, was sold, and is now profitable.

Stupak continued to plan Vegas projects, including a purchase of the Moulin Rouge Hotel and a huge hotel shaped like the RMS Titanic, but these endeavors never bore fruit.

Stupak appeared in the first season of the GSN series High Stakes Poker. He also appeared at a final table during the first season of the World Poker Tour.

As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceeded $865,000.

Stupak died of leukemia in 2009.

Emilio Gomez Steps Down from Party Gaming Board of Directors, by Jessica Welman - 27th September 2009

PartyGaming lost a member of its Board of Directors last week, when Non-Executive Directors Emilio Gomez stepped down from his post for personal reasons. The official statement from PartyGaming announcing his resignation made no mention of a future replacement and noted a balance between Executive and Non-Executive members of the Board in the wake of Gomez’s departure.

Now that Gomez has moved on, the Board consists of seven members, including Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan, Non-Executive Chairman Rod Perry, and Finance Director Martin Weigold. Gomez first began his tenure as one of the group’s Non-Executive Directors in December of 2007 and served as the representative for Party Gaming co-founder Anurag Dikshit.

In December of 2008, Dikshit became the first online gambling mogul to face legal action in a U.S. Court when he agreed to forfeit $300 million in earnings from the company after admitting to breaking laws related to the Wire Act in conjunction with Party Gaming. In exchange for the monetary settlement, Dikshit avoided jail time until at least December of 2010 and continues to reside in Gibraltar, where Party Gaming is based. Dikshit stepped down from the Board of Directors in 2006 to serve as the company’s Head of Research and Special Projects. There has been no announcement as of yet as to how Gomez’s departure will influence Dikshit’s influence on the Board. PartyGaming can be found on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol “PRTY.” It is the parent company of the popular online poker site PartyPoker.

Gomez’s resignation is just the latest in a long list of changes for PartyGaming this year. The company’s purchase of World Poker Tour Enterprises (WPTE) in August as well as numerous business-to-business ventures like the purchase of the online bingo company Cashcade and the launch of an Italian online poker site in tandem with Intralot have headlined a busy 2009 for PartyGaming. In its mid-year financial report, Ryan said the company would continue to pursue these profitable business-to-business deals and invest more time and effort in PartyCasino, its online casino business.

In the week following Gomez’s announcement, PRTY shares have seen a slight drop in value, falling from a high of $282 on September 23rd to a low of $263.80 towards the end of day on the 24th. At the close of the business day on Friday, shares were trading at $267.60. Despite the slight drop this week, PartyGaming stocks have been on a rise as a whole in 2009, increasing in value from $195 in January to a high of $283 in May to its current trading price of $267.60.
